if it shows a sad icon and there is a clicking noise, then its the hard drive.

you could try scan disk in windows or hddscan in ipod diag but most likely you'll need to replace the hard drive.

Edit

hold select and menu button till you see the apple logo, then straight away hold the back and select button.

this will take you into ipod diagnostic mode.

Select manual, I/O, hard drive, HDSMARTData.

If there is a lot of Reallocs or Pending Sectors then your hard drive is failing or failed.

just try the hdsmartdata thing, its most likely the hard drive anyway.

I replaced mine with one off ebay, cost about £30 IIRC.

Menu and select
When Apple log appears quickly switch to pause and select

Enter disk mode. Connect to pc/mac/laptop and then restore in itunes.
