Hi,
Our Glow Worm boiler went.. Engineer has been here today to check.. He said that the control board isn't working.. Quoted over £300.. He offered a new Vailant 24kw replacement for £800 within a week or so.. The way he was handling the situation tells me he is not a top guy in the business, couldn't take off the cover etc..

I am open for new solutions and ideas, any.. let's forget the quotes and this guy.. is there any discount or support out there for home owners?? I'm not receiving any benefits to qualify for the Government Help..
What would you do in my case??
Thanks for your suggestion people

£50 quid

Assuming it is the board. What are the symptoms? And the exact model number.

Betacom 24, I will put the serial number too soon.
Symptoms are, flashing red light, as no ignition. No heating, no hot water. Engineer says everything is working except the board.
I have restarted the boiler already, no change. When I open the hot water tap the boiler kicks in but not getting hot of course as no fire

If he didn't know how to take the cover off, and you're not confident in his ability, you probably have cause to question his diagnosis.

If thats £800 fitted I would go for it as thats cheap. The boilers are that price alone without the flue or fitting.
#6
Worth checking the system pressure, most of them lock out and will not work below 0.8 bar pressure. Also make sure the overflow is not overflowing outside....this could i dicate that the expansion tank bladder has failed and the tank is totally full of water with no room for the water to expand when the system heats up (an external tank could be added and leave the awkward one still fitted). If it does turn out to be the control board just look on ebay and match one up.....they are very easy to fit for a moderately competent diy person.

£800 instead of what could be a very cheap and simple fix to the OPs existing boiler?

I'd be wary the 'engineer' wasn't planning on fixing the OPs boiler only to charge someone else £800 for installing it, rinse and repeat....
#9
I suspect the £800 was for the boiler and he'll charge for fitting. Agree op needs second opinion.

The individual that could not take the cover off, did you find him on the internet? is he a sole or part of a coy, if a company get on to them and explain you are contacting gas safe......

I would get a gas safe engineer (https://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/find-an-engineer) in to diagnose and fix for you,

if it is a gloworm betacom 24, it has a screen over the 3 button, what does it say on the screen?

Fair enough, if there are other factors, but struggling with the cover alone isn't enough reason to doubt him. Everyone has a brain fart every so often. I've seen enough good mechanics struggle with opening a bonet before now!
If you're that concerned, go for a second opinion. Worst case scenario, you go back to him.

We had a guy come out to fix our boiler was covered by our home insurance, the guy hummed and hummed again, couldn't figure it out then started the selling process, going to be expensive, cheaper to buy a new one. Told him I didn't care as it was insured, eventually he "managed" to fix it, replacing a part I had told him was the cause :) and it wasn't an expensive one either. he had order the part and come back, sooo you know how it went when he came back, oh last legs cheaper to buy a new one, would cost this that, a year later and still going strong.

Get someone else to give you an opinion, maybe even call the manufacturer and get them to quote you.

I found him in the local newspaper.. The £800 inclusive of Vailant 24kw boiler, filter and fitting..he said.
Since he came the boiler changed reaction when I turn on.. Yesterday cintinuous red light no ignition and no noise from boiler, Today flashing red light and noise when I run the tap.
There is no screen to show any failure code.
Is there any way I could open a valve to release air from gas pipe (without blowing the road up)?

Hi,
Our boiler purchased in 2008 and has no LCD screen. So The failure code is unknown. I bought this house 11 months ago, last been serviced 2 years back by first owner

I'd get a second opinion, may just be a simple low cost fix....

IF your pondering getting the new Valiant fitted, get a written quotation for supply and installing, this should show the exact model he's priced it on, check online to see what it costs and for reviews...

Fair enough

OP as others have said you need a second or even third opinion.

Check https://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/ and use your postcode to find a qualified gas engineer locally.

It may cost you a tenner for another opinion but that's nothing for peace of mind.

You'll never get a gas engineer who knows every model or every brand of boiler... They all work the same so someone who knows the ins and outs can troubleshoot it but every call will be a different boiler or you may never see that model again. A good engineer will probably have some sort of reference material to help id the problem though. I fix printers and sometimes I've struggled to find the off button because there are so many places to hide it, I'm a competent engineer with a brain though well mostly :).

If you used the same gas safe, trust a trader registered engineer from Thame I used when my kingfisher 2 boiler set the CO alarm off then go elsewhere. He asked me how to dismantle the boiler, didn't clean the main filter gauze, condemned it and wanted to fit a replacement. Got another local, word of mouth recommended, gas safe engineer who serviced it and cured the problem.

GUYS, BOILER ISSUE SORTED... Thanks for all the help.
Whatch this, the first engineer told me everything is working except the control board, which would cost me at least £300. So he said let's change the whole system, he can provide and fix Vailaint 24kw for £800...
Today second engineer came and found the real problem, one of the air pipe was loose so the system stoped. Cost me £30, only. Part, labour, all..gave him £40 ;)
If you are interested I can provide picture.. just tell me how to upload here :)

Glad you gave them the extra tenner, I did the same. Shows that honesty pays and we both ended up saving a fortune anyway. No excuse for the first engineer who came out to my problem as mine is a basic balanced flue type, nothing fancy, albeit old. Only called the 2nd engineer for a quote but he said he wanted to try to fix it first as old boilers cost more to run in gas but don't cost anything like the new boilers in parts as they're always going wrong. Only ever had to change a 3 port valve and pump in 18 years, which I've done myself.
