£350 to spend on a computer...What's the best deal?

Rayman, please help!
In March I bought a Dell Dimension 3000 on your recommendation, and I have been delighted with it.
My friend is now looking to buy something similar and has around £350 to spend. She would like it for Christmas. Can you recommend anything?
We tried ringing Dell sales, but got confused with technicalities. They tried to sell her something dearer than she can afford on interest free credit.

Nothing special really. You can get by far better Acers for this price.
For example, this machine with 17" TFT will cost 404 quid (see bundle deals):
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=95738

It is short on RAM (only 256) but another additional 256Mthat costs about 20 quid from Crucial.

If you don't need monitor then something like this should be OK:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=13547999264&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=95745

This is just a suggestion :) I didn't do any price research, so it is possible that you'll find it cheaper elsewhere.
#3
Thank you Kommunist. We definitely need a monitor and would like flat screen. Would rather spend £350 than £400 if possible.
Thanks for your help.
#4
Sorry I only just got round to this Christmasshopper

Kommunist's deals are good, but I think the Dell deal is worth the money. Plus if your friend goes through QuidCo, she can earn 5% in cashback too.

I'll check through the other Dell's, but it's good to have a choice of other brands as Kommunist has posted :) such as the Acer.
#5
Can't you stretch to 499? Just look at this spec:

AMD Athlon™ 64 3000+ Processor
with HyperTransport™ Technology
Genuine Windows® XP Home
ASUS Nforce 410 PCI- X Mainboard
512MB DDR400 Memory
160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive
128MB Nvidia GeForce 6100 Graphics
19" TFT Flat Panel Display
Sony 16x Dual Layer DVD Writer
5.1 Channel Surround Sound Audio
Sound Blaster SB260 Speakers
Media Card Reader 15 in 1
Logitech Desktop KB & Optical Mouse
Classic Warranty - 3 Years Parts & Lab

http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODUCTVIEWPAGE&USG=PRODUCT&ENT=PRODUCT&KEY=54814
#6
No. She is struggling to stretch to £350, but her daughter needs it for her college work.
#7
There's a monitorless Celeron base unit for £235.07p including VAT/Delivery. Around £8 in cashback through QuidCo would make that effectively £227 approximately, after cashback received.

Intel 2.53GHz Celeron D Processor 325 (533fsb, 256K cache)
512MB Dual Channel DDR400 RAM
80GB (7,200rpm) Hard Drive
XP Home SP2
USB Keyboard and mouse [can select optical mouse if preferred]
48x CD-ROM can be upgraded at a later date for around £40 to DVD+/-ReWriter drive

Then it's find a TFT monitor for around £130 or so.

I agree it's probably worth spending a little more if you want it to be more than office/internet surfing capable. 80Gb hard drive and 512Mb RAM are reasonable though.

I'll look some more later.

How about this:
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1130016159.1133448136@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccccaddgghfjmfecflgceggdhhmdgmj.0&page=Product&sku=800543&calling_page=Product
Use 5% off code and you'll get it for 290 inc VAT and delivery.

Thank you. Your help is appreciated.
I am really happy with my Dell 3000. Have they stopped selling them in favour of of the 3100? Or were Dell just trying to sell something dearer?

£411 for Pentium 2.8GHz, 160Gb hard drive, 512Mb RAM, 15" TFT monitor.

3.GHz with 17" TFT £423 total.

3.GHz with 80Gb HD + 15" TFT £388 total.
#12
Do you have any links for these Rayman?
#13
Sorry, the 3100 for £388 is a 2.8GHz Pentium 4

3100 15" TFT at £388

3100 17" TFT at £423

3100 15" TFT at £411

3100 at £353

1100 Base Unit Only at £235

Is the limit definitely £350?
#14
Could stretch to a bit more if absolutely necessary. Particularly if interest free credit or buy now pay later deals are available.
#15
Rayman, I clicked on your "£3100 at £353" link and it is £470. What have I done wrong? :?
#16
You need to downgrade the collect and return to 1 year then update before you add it to your basket
#17
I know that you are after a desktop and not laptop but LOOK at THIS:

# Medion MD42773 Notebook
# Microsoft® Windows® XP Home
# Intel® Pentium® M Processor with 1.50 GHz
# 15.4" TFT WXGA display with 1280x800 px.
# 16:10 for optimized DVD playback
# 512MB DDR-RAM memory
# Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 - Wireless LAN 802.11g
# 60 GB hard disk
# DVD-Writer/-ReWriter (DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW + CD-RW + DVD-ROM)
# 32 bit 3D/2D graphics integrated in Intel 855 GM chipset
# 16 bit Sound chip & 2 loudspeakers
# 4 in 1 multicardreader
# 10/100 Mbit Fast Ethernet LAN port & 56K V.90 Modem
# Integrated Touchpad with two mouse buttons
# UK Keyboard with 2 Multimedia Hotkeys
# External AC adapter & Li-Ion battery VDE/GS approved

PRICE: 295.00

Refurbished from https://www.medionshop.co.uk/

UPD: It seems that since I posted this info, the laptop is not unavailable :( However, they still have several very good laptops for rock bottom price.
Don't be fooled by low GHZ values of 'M' processors- these are much faster than its desktop siblings!
#18
That was a great offer. I think it was probably one of their refurbs and so there could have been just the one. But it's always worth checking out the Medion Shop, they produce some hot deals.

Thanks for the reminder about them Kommunist :)
#19
You welcome :) Pity this laptop gone though...
#20
Last christmas I was in the same position £300 or so to spend and through advice here i bought a dell box from the small bus site and a TFT monitor seperately. about a month ago I had some money and wanted another slightly better computer for my daughter who has a visual impairment -bought a dell 5150 but it came with a 17" TFt monitor. I really wanted just the box as after Christma when prices went down I wanted a 20" or bigger TFT for her to be able to see better -so to cut a long story short-I have a 17" Dell monitor which arrived early November -currently unused and as the deal I got through this site was brill I could sell it to you at a bit cheaper -not sure maybe £100? if that helps at all-it depends where you are and how economical etc it is to get to you?

Just an idea!
#21
Thank you Caron. I'll pass the message on to my friend.
#22
That's a generous offer caron :)

There's a 3100 base unit available I think too, I'll have a look for it if you think it's what your friend would want Christmasshopper.
#23
At the moment I think the £353 Dell package is looking favourite. Which modem does it need for internet access?
#24
If you want, select their Dell v92 Data/Fax modem [add £11.75] to have it installed before you buy it. That is fine for dial-up internet. I think 3100 has an Ethernet port too, for broadband or network connection.
#25
Rayman, would you be kind enough to do me a list of the things that are included in the price of the £353 computer + the £11.75 for the modem, please? (similar to the 31 point list that I received from Dell and posted on the 1st page). Also, if possible, will you give me instructions for how to order through Quidco. Will we need a product code to find it again with out your link?
Thank you for your help.
#26
Sure I'll go through it now for you and post it here shortly.
#27
[color=darkblue]Okay, you'll firstly need to join QuidCo to use your own personal link to Dell from there.

1] Sign in to QuidCo
2] Search for the Dell link from there and click through to Dell.Co.UK
3] Search by E-Value Code: 305 [first box] d12311a [second box]
4] Select 1 year collect and return option [then use the update price button]
5] Select Dell v92 Data/Fax modem [Included in Price] option [then use the update price button again]
6] Select Dell USB Optical Mouse add £0.00 if you prefer that at no extra charge [then update again]
5] Click on Continue, Add to basket and go right through to checkout. The price should show as £364.32p

There's a new deal for a Dimension 5150c and 15" TFT for £367. A better deal I think although it doesn't have a combo drive...
#29
Yeah, I agree with that. The 5150c on the front page: Here would be a much better option. Dell have some great bargains on right now. It's worth paying that bit more, the 9150 looks very good too.

VAT Summary

Which is the best deal now? :?:
#32
Is that £338.61p delivered or £59.26p to add?
#33
Well spotted Rayman. I'm glad you have got your eye on the ball.
It looks like it is a sub total of £338.61 excluding VAT. The price including VAT is £397.87. There was no mention of delivery charge, so we have just emailed him to ask him to confirm that the price includes delivery.
The longer we spend making a decision, the more extras they offer. I wish I'd realised that back in March when I ordered mine.
[admin]#34
That system is far below the 5150 in terms of features. The 3100 is the base system while the 5150 is better specc'd (except for the DVDRW drive). We've seen the system he's offering a couple weeks ago for £291 shipped I believe.

Don't be fooled by the Dell reps haggling. They are absolutely full of nonsense and you would do well to ignore most of the lines they feed you. Definitely post on here before you make a decision!
#35
If that's not including delivery, could you swap that Lexmark printer for free delivery or better spec? They printers are rubbish, you know :)
#36
The 5150 on the front page has a 48x/32x/48x/16x CDRW/DVD ROM combination drive. What does this do?
#37
Plays DVDs and records CDs?
#38
The £353 5150 on the front page is by far the better deal for that amount of money. You'll still need to add the 56k modem though, if you want dial-up internet.

As Admin says, please post here before you decide.
#39
My friend has asked me to pass on her thanks to you for all the time you have taken to help her. She was delighted to take your advise and has just ordered the Dell 5150. It will be delivered before Christmas.
I would like to thank you all too. You are marvelous.
