Hi,

I want a 4gb MP3 Player. I have a maxium budget of £40. I would like it to be made by a well known brand. The only requirement is that is has a screen. The screen can be small, as i just find it easier to find songs (eg not iPod Nano)

Thanks, Rep will be added for all helpful comments.

There's quite a few 4GB mp3 players on the net in your price range but I decided I'd only look for the one's I'd personally buy myself if I was on the same budget.

The only decent one I could find was this sandisk one which looks pretty neat to me. It is £10 more than your budget though. You'd have to read reviews about it of course. But I'm sure that spending a little more money will be worth it in the long run.

That looks good, the only thing is that I've searched all over google and it seems that amazon is the only seller of the 4gb version!
I don't know how no other online stores stock it but all sites advertising it link back to amazon.
#7
So do you think it will really take 1-2 months to dispatch? Or are they just being extra careful not to let people down due to what happened with the Wii's and DS's over Christmas?
#8
I dunno, I reckon there might not be any stock with amazon the only place selling them.
All the price check sites say "stock unknown" or similar.
#9
When I was searching earlier, I found this site.
It looks exactly like amazon so I thought it was just amazon under a different name. (Edit: Top right corner says "In association with amazon, so the same thing)
But it claims to have the item in stock but will still take >1 month to dispatch.
Never heard of them before but you could give it a shot if you want.

No, it still says dispatched within 1 to 2 months which is the same as Amazon, so theres no point risking it.
I might just put in an order with Amazon and hope for the best.

Anyway, cheers mate

I found a Creative Zen V+ 4GB for 60 quid from Amazon, here

Amazon also have the Zen Stone for 40 quid, but it's more like a shuffle thing, so it would be harder to navigate through songs and stuff.
#12
Yea i saw that, but its a bit more than i was looking to spend.
The MOST i could stretch out is £50, but only if it is ALOT better than one i could get for £40.
#13
Probably just try ebay some people are buying the Zens off Amzon for £40 and selling them on ebay. They go for about £5-10 more on ebay but reviews are great for it
#14
They might be. But i want to try and avoid Ebay.

Having bought my daughter the Sandisk Sansa e260 I would recommend it. Worth the extra £9 if you can make your budget stretch. Has good reviews (both user and professional) and is in the very recent batch of BEST BUYS on the WHICH? website.

Has an expansion slot so you can increase memory and lots of useful accessories available on the internet.

If you do a search at novatech for mp3 4gb you get a few nice ones for less than £40. You might go a few pence over with P&P.

I was thinking to get an mp3 player as well - just to play music, and voice recorder would be an advantage...
Was also thinking of Sandisk Sansa 8Gb http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/-/595/803/-/3478029/SanDisk-Sansa-e280-8GB-MP3-Player-With-FM-Radio/Product.html?searchtype=genre
but Creative Zen Stone caught my eye and I'm not sure which one to choose.... First of all, is there an 8gb Creative Zen Stone. And does any one work as a voice recorder?

Thank you!!

The Zen Stone isn't available in 8gb. It's only tiny you know! Plus when your pushing up to sizes such as 8gb it means even more songs. Around 2000 in 8gb. Trying to navigate through those songs on the Stone's tiny screen would be a nightmare!
You need a big screen if you're going to have that many songs!
#19
ok, I also looked at ipods. Are there any large capacity without video? And if an average price for 8gb ipod nano video is £120, why not to buy Apple Classic 160GB Video Ipod for £210, which is 20x the capacity larger and less than twice more expensive than previously mentioned...
And what's the difference between all those ipod?? Nano, classic, slim, large, video, touch blah blah blah...
I'm really confused, please be kind to explain me!!!

If im honest. I love apple products and have owned an ipod for over 5 years. So I'd recommend one to anyone over any mp3. Then again I am a bit biased!

I'll try and give a brief summary of the different iPods on the market today.
iPod shuffle
1gb - 240 songs
5 colours
£49
No screen
Very small
Indestructible? lol
Made for those who only listen to a few albums at a time.

iPod Nano
4gb - 1000 songs or 8gb - 2000 songs
5 colours
From £99
Good quality colour screen
Plays videos
Very slim, fits in the smallest of pockets
You feel it may snap in half in your fingers
Made for those who like to listen to music and watch videos but don't have an extensive library.
Recommended

iPod Classic
80gb - 20,000 songs or 160gb - 40,000 songs
2 colours
From £159
Good quality colour screen
Plays videos
Twice the size of the Nano and thicker too.
Less breakable some would say.
Made for those who have a huge library of songs and movies to watch on their iPod.

iPod Touch
8gb - 2000 songs or 16gb - 4000 songs
From £199
Huge excellent quality colour screen
Touch screen
Plays videos in excellent quality
Very slim - 8mm thick
Attracts finger prints
Wifi for the internet
View full internet pages, not cut down versions
Made for those who don't have a huge library of songs but like to watch videos on the go and surf the net.

Basically, go for the model you will think you will need.
Yes, you could pay a bit more and get 10 times the amount of space, but would you ever use all that space?
Plus there are drawbacks to all the models.
#23
Thank you, rep add surely deserved! Your description is so helpful that I'm not sure ipod or sansa to choose from :)))
#24
Aww thanks for the rep!
The Sansa is cheaper and you can increase the memory, at least by 4gb if not doubling it to 16gb. Won't cost the earth to do that either. So if you get more songs over time, you can capacitate them instead of getting a new player.
On the other hand, the iPod is hugely popular for good reason. Good customer service and reliable. Also if you use iTunes already then it's a no brainer.

I suppose that doesn't make the decision any easier! lol
#25
although I own a 3rd generation Nano 4gb I would still recommend the Sansa e260 given your budget and the advantages of expanding the memory.

My duaghter loves the one we gave her for her birthday in December.

Another possible advantage is it's compatibility with Windows Media Player, particularly when some download sites (e,g, Tesco) use the WMA format.

This is one small irritation about Apple ipods and that fact that Apple don't use WMA.
