You usually have to switch over 3 direct debits to qualify

No but Halifax have the reward thing where they pay you £5 a month (from what I remember)

which is easy to do, charity, paypal, online saving account, cheap magazine subscription, many like the current TSB switch via MSE is still 2 to qualify.

Check out the First Direct T&C's; I am sure it says "open an account" rather than "transfer an account". There are other terms to be aware of, like the minimum monthly amount going through the account and the length of time you need to have the account open.

OK, they have changed it, the £100/£250 offer has been running from long before the new account switching service was even thought of; but I see they have now included it as part of the deal (I got it when I switched ~14 years ago).

It might be worth calling them and asking the question though, not having an existing bank account isnt mentioned anywhere in the blurb, it only says you mustnt be a bankrupt etc.
