I have an Acer Aspire laptop. It just switches on briefly, the lights on the keyboard light up,the hard drive tries to start, then the laptop cuts out & the process begins again. The screen fails to come on. I've tried the usual: cleaning the fan, removing the battery & memory & putting them back.Any ideas what the problem could be??

Sounds like the battery is dead and doesn't have enough charge to start it up.

If it's not that it could be the charger not charging the battery, so you'll probably need to get a new charger.

Does it start up with just the charger in?
Does it even try to turn on with the charger in and the battery out?
If not, I suspect it's a bad charger not charging the battery.

I've tried the charger plugged in without/with the battery inserted - still the same problem

Take the hdd off then try again and see what happens.

which is the results you would expect if the charger was faulty

try pressing f8 and loading it in safe mode,
then install the last known backup when it last turned off.

as it may be that you boot file has been deleted. may be the case of simply backing up your files and re installing windows.

Can you hear the fan?

The fan briefly comes on.The screen does not come on so there are no screen prompts to load it in safe mode

Have you tried pulling the extra ram. That normally causes a cmos reset if your bios settings are corrupt.

I thought it could be a BIOS fault & a change of battery might be the answer?

Does anything appear on the screen? I had a hp laptop that did what you are describing, turned out it was the motherboard that failed. How long have you had it?

Nothing appears on the screen.I've had it for about 6 years so i'm expecting the worse

Do you hear any beeps at all? If not with all the other info posted it does sound like the motherboard has gone. I would advise to try some independent computer shops that do free diagnostics to see what they say and hopefully they will all give you the same answer...

If it does turn out to be dead, you should still be able to retrieve any data from the hard drive

Hello I had this same problem and its hell to find proper help online, actually its non-existent.

if you are running Windows 8 it normally updates software in the background, it sounds like what happened was an automatic update had taken place and it messed up.

this happened to me a while ago, if you bought it from currys/pcworld take it to knowhow section and they will start it for you

if you didn't buy it from there just take it in and say that its not starting up and just lie and say you bought it from there, (if they ask) they are really unprofessional and stupid so they dont ask for receipt or proof most of the time

hope it helps.

edit- if you had it for 6 years the whole thing must be dead not to sure now i thought it was just bios probably

I would pull out everything you can. Hdd, ram, etc. and see if you can get into the BIOS.

If it's doing the same with the charger plugged in or without it plugged in, then I wouldn't suspect the charger to be honest. Are your charging lights coming on when it's powerd off?

If still nothing, then you need to start checking more stuff, popping the case and checking all cables, ensuring the CPU is seated correctly and the fan starts, although I doubt it's reaching thermal shutdown temp. Disconnect the internal modem, wifi adapter, anything you can really.

Try and find a charger at the same rating as yours to elliminate that if you can. A local computer shop might help here, I have a million Chargers thst would probably work, but unless you're in the DN area that's no good to you.

As someone said, if it's dead you should still be able to recover the data off the drive when you get a new machine.

Good luck.
