ADSL Broadband & Landline Package ...Maybe Tiscali?

Trying to setup my Uncle with Broadband.

No chance of getting VirginMedia Cable as the street hasnt been laid with it.

Was going to sign up to VirginMedia ADSL and their £14.99 deal which has evening & weekend calls for free and upto 8Mb Broadband, a free TV Box or free wireless modem...

BUT

Then I stumbled accross Tiscali who do a service for £14.99 but with the Line Rental for free! ...no need to pay BT anymore?

Not to mention the Quidco on offer for both of these

Is it any good? Anyone have an alternative?

Cheers in advance :)

Tiscali are a great company

I would recommend you read the details of the line rental thingy I think you may need a BT line.

However an alternative is BT Broadband £8.95 per month for the first 6 months, and for a £30 installation fee you can get BT vision thrown in. BT vision acts very much like Sky+ on a freeview channel list, with the added benefit of being able to download video and movie content from the BT library. The BT vision deal you have to take out a monthly subscription minimum £6 but can cancel it after the first month.

Sorry but got to disagree with you on that.
I was with Tiscali for over 3 years and they are terrible.
They block ports and slow your connection from 4pm to midnight every night.
Originally I couldn't fault them, but the last year was bad.
Constant disconnections and the worst customer service ever.
Now I have left they are trying to bill me another month (cancelled my direct debit  ) and I can't get through to speak to anyone about it on there premium helpline, anyway I've emailed them 3 times and no more phone calls from me. I'll wait to see what happens. sorry , rant over! :w00t:

I know they all have their good and bad points, but I would never recommend Tiscali

Fair point, well made. I had no problem with them, but would say exactly the same that you have said for Orange. I have just escaped them.

I loved freeserve, I loved wanadoo but when orange came along the company turned into the most pityful pile of cr*p anyone could have the misfortune to deal with. rant over :w00t: :w00t:

I too would never recommend Tiscali. We could hardly use it at all in the evenings as the connection was so poor. Then it just stopped working and for 6 weeks they promised to fix it. We then cancelled and were told that this would take 4 weeks to go through. We waited the 4 weeks and then found out that they hadn't done it at all! I kicked up a fuss and got it cancelled but then continued to receive bills for the entire 2 months or so that I was without broadband - I ended up get Bailiff letters from them even though everytime I rang up they said that I didn't have to pay them as they did not provide the service (which it turns out had been turned off by accident on their part!!!!).

Eventually I wrote to the Managing Director of Tiscali who's assistant called me and sorted it all out but the end result was I went with BT and WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND TISCALI TO ANYONE!!

I'm sure everyone's experience is different but I just found them completely incompetent - they even billed me to my old address for 8 months after I'd moved (and they had switched the line to the new address!!).

The Line Rental is with Tiscali...you no longer have to pay BT.

Tiscali was the worst isp i have ever had
in the end they released me from my contract free of charge (long story)
i am surprised no legal ruling has been made against this type of company who advertise things that, clearly, in practise they cannot, do not and will not provide

I'm now with BT and upto now cant fault them, but only time will tell!
be very careful signing upto line rental with tiscali, I have heard it is difficult to switch back to BT if you want/need to, and can leave you without internet for a while whilst its sorted.

Whatever you do, DON'T USE VIRGIN MEDIA! Sorry for shouting, but you'll thak me for it if you surf the web and read all the posts about how shoddy their service is. I'm going to leave them and probably go to UKFSN.

With Tiscali
1) Random dropping of the internet at any time... not necessarily dropping of connection to Tiscali though.
2) MSN screws up. They have a limited number of ports at their end that MSN uses, so when a lot of people start to use it MSN screws up signing you in/out constantly... until you shout at Tiscali down the phone until they give you a permanent port.
3) As aforementioned, very slow internet speeds in the evenings. Like, really slow... red bar on Halo if that's a scale you can relate to! Maybe 10kbps.
4) Random days where you can't connect to them for hours
5) Terrible customer service which always blames you no matter what the problem is.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head... there's been other stuff!

I'm now with BT too. I work from home one day a week so needed reliability so figured that since they own most of the hardware (or did at the time) then they should be the more reliable ones! Touch wood, they have been really good and have not experienced any problems other than the fact that I wanted to send e-mails via their POP3 server which they wouldn't give out the details of. Soon Googled round that one though! :whistling:

I now pay £12 a month for the service which they offered me to renew my contract so comparable to other places. Also am just waiting for delivery of my new home hub and BT Vision box which I got for £28. :)

I use Virgin previously NTL myself...never had a problem with them on either their ADSL or Cable service

Tisacli is the worst ISP i have had.

Ukonline is the most reliable I have been with.

I am currently with orange, i get average speeds, and maybe drop off onces every 3 days, but for £5 a month I think thats fair enough

You are storing up problems for the future by selecting the Tiscali integrated service - you cannot simply get a MAC from them and transfer to another supplier - see some of the specialist forums. Start by accepting the BT offer via Quidco (£40) and diary the expiry date so you can change or renegotiate. Tiscali often slow and generally poor service - they will negotiate on price though if this is critical.
