Advice on getting a better S4 Mini contract with 3 Network

So basically I've been a customer for four years, currently on a cheapo £6.90 a month contract (200mins, unlimited texts, 500mb data, PERFECT) after having a two year Sony phone contract. I tell them I want the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and the best deal I've found is with O2 (300mins, unlimited texts, 300mb data, no upfront cost £17p/m).

I speak with both upgrades and cancellations departments and get told by both the lowest contract they can do is £21 p/m (300mins, unlimited texts, 1gb data, no upfront cost). This is a terrible deal, even if I were to buy the phone PAYG I'd still be saving money and not be tied into a contract :/

Am I missing something? or has Three become really sloppy with their deals?

Any advice on getting a better deal?

Any 3 Network employees on here that can chime in?

I don't work for 3, or any other network, but the last 2 handsets I bought with a 3 contract were purchased via third party websites. One site was affordable mobiles and the other was Argos mobile. There are others too, but these two were very reliable and cheaper than buying directly from 3 themselves. You still get your minutes, texts and data allowances, but the upfront fees aren't charged, if you choose carefully.

won't there be problems keeping your number though if you don't upgrade direct and get a new contract through a 3rd party? unless you do the old temporary switcheroo to another network

and tbh if i were you i'd buy the phone sim free and stay on the same sim. S4s can be bought for under £300 new now can't they?

Yeh I'm leaning towards SIM free after looking around, Galaxy S5 mini is coming out soon so we're sure to see a S4 mini price drop SIM free. I'd just love the option to pay the phone off over a year or two rather than upfront :/
