Depends what you want in a phone for a 11 year old, versus what he would want.

For PAYG phone I would go for this:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/650708/new-samsung-e2100-phone-with-blueto

It's got a WAP internet browser and it can play java games.

But I bet he'd want something like this:
http://www.dialaphone.co.uk/pay-as-you-go/o2/nokia-5530-xpressmusic/
which is £79.95 after a £10 phone credit.

For me, their only choice is the first one :-D

Both are on O2 PAYG.

Its worth checking before you buy the phone what sort of restrictions or parental controls you can set on it (It varies across manufacturer). As full access to the internet on any device is for an 11 year old, i'll advised.

Good luck finding a decent deal.

?
Difficult to find a trade off between what a child thinks they need and what is appropriate. 11 isn't very old to have an all singing all dancing internet access phone. Doesn't this make it more likely to get nicked at school than a sensible texting phone which also makes phonecalls?? Basic Nokias come to mind. Not worth nicking but the child can always contact someone in an emergency.

a phone for browsing for 11 year olds !! that sounds a bit dangerous. i work in school and all the kids have got porn and all kinds of inappropriate stuff on it be careful!

Seeing as pretty much everyphone in the last 10 years has had mobile internet it will be close to imporssible to get one without it.

With all due respect - I disagree totally with that statement!

wouldnt advise getting one where your 11 year old can access the internet. Id bar it straight away not only can it cost a fortune but the internet is packed with rudey dudey pics im sure you dont want your 11 year old son to see......

Try the budget Nokias for starters! And the budget Samsungs.
Some of those have cameras and bluetooth - but no internet.

I stand by the fact that IMHO no kid needs internet on their phone. I've seen firsthand the problems it can cause. Internet should still be supervised with kids of that age. I'm a fan of the computer in the lounge and no laptops in bedrooms for youngsters.

we have the pc in the lounge and no laptops. i have wifi on my contract phone, but he plays really kids games on it and travian thing so not so dangerous. he is sensible kid, but as single parent i dont want him to feel like the cheapo kid. he be pleased with anything but has got teased before over clothes etc for no labels. dont want him to start off grammar like that again.

is it better to go for a new one or used/clearance. any feedback appreciated. cant afford to waste money on the wrong thing.

No need to be so rude! Here's just a couple... there are more but I'm not in the mood for playing stupid games. I am genuinely trying to help the original poster, can't be ar$ed with the baiting.

My choice would be new if you can afford it - with some kind of child-proof insurance!
:)
Good Luck with finding something that both you and he are happy with.
