After a decent sat nav

Just noticed this TomTom One Sat Nav on Ebuyer for what seems to be a great price.

My dad's always driving around different places so it seems logical for him to have one, plus I'm away on a course next week so we were thinking if I could buy one and have it by then it'd be absolutely ace.

But in the same respect, I've heard TomTom's aren't too good and have rather poor support for speed cameras etc? Is there any other unit for a similar price I should check out? My friend very luckily picked up a great one from Asda for £100, does absolutely everything, incredibly easy to use (this is a must), full touch screen etc, alas, they don't do them anymore!

Ah excellent, thanks! Have added to both your reps :-)

Edit: or not, sorry!

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to currychops again.

One quick question, does it pick up speed cameras etc? Not that my dad ever speeds of course, but it's nice to know just incase!
#3
NO...my son has the Europe model and you have to pay for the download from the tom tom website.
The garminC510 Deluxe £199.99 at Halfords has pre installed safety camera database and european street level mapping..but I guess if you prefer the Tom Tom and pay for the camera download it will come to much the same price.

You can easily get after market free camera updates for the tomtom google is you friend

After years of satnav Get A TOMTOM u cant beat them.....trust me ive done thousands of miles with mine and its 99% to get u there dont buy a cheaper wannabe
#6
Excellent, thanks once again for the replies guys! (duly rep'd of course!)

I've noticed this site for updates, seems quite reasonable and since it's for a business it makes sense to do things 'properly' - http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/

Just want to confirm before ordering that I won't need to order any extra cables or an extra memory stick? Cheers

depends whot TT u buy most peeps i have reloaded there software onto a new sd card as there virtualy full when u buy them.........( if u want all the voices speed cams etc etc )

Any recommendations on what card to get? Ideally I want everything up and running by the weekend so I can use it for my trip on Monday! :)
#9
Ordered now, thanks!

I guess I'll need some accessories;

- Car charger
- Case
- Memory stick? (still unsure)

Ebay? :)
#10
If it is a tomtom you will probly need a bigger SD card as they seem to ship with the bare minimum size to run out of the box. 2gig cards are going for £20-£25 at places like dabs and eBay. The pocketgpsworld site is a good place but you can still get everything you want for free if you have a look about and use google.

1gb memory card here but only required if you want to store extra data that will not fit onto the supplied card....you have to back up the supplied data onto a PC or laptop ...of course you could then back up onto a spre SD card just in case the original goes astray or becomes corrupted.

The unit connects to the cigarette lighter so no charger required for in car.

Cases are expensive...you could improvise and buy something that fits snugly ..they charge silly prices for the Tom Tom accessories.

look here if you require a 2gb card...I'm not really sure?

Trying to be helpful and not intending to flame you here, but what you have said isn't 100% accurate. The map for the UK is in the 650-700mb area alone so by the time you have extra voices on there you would be far better getting a 2gig card specially if you wanted to add an extra map (France maybe). You can only use one SD card at any one time so it must have all the information on that SD card, its not like you can load one up and switch then load the 2nd one (which is how you make it sound). The unit can be used without plugging into the ciggy lighter but will chew the battery in no time. Having the tom tom plugged into the ciggy lighter will recharge the unit as well as power it. If you install the TomTom Home software (from CD that came with unit or from website) you can make backup's in case or data corruption. Classic example of how to do this is pair it with your phone, it starts DLing an update then you un-pair the phone, whole thing stops working (been there got the t-shirt  ).
#14
Thanks for clarification...no I did not wish to give the impression that 2 SD cards can be used....I just didn't know what capacity was required to hold all the info..so 2 gb sounds best.
#15
Huge thanks again chaps, I'm gonna order that 2GB SD card now (I assume it comes with a 1GB card then?) and also grab a case from ebay :-)
#16
Before I order it, what do you think of this?

Cheers!

(Ordered that 2GB Kingston SD btw)

It's a really steep postage charge...it will cost less than a quid to post something as light as that..but that's the ebay game ..make the profit on postage.
#18
Indeed! I'm not after anything fancy, but that's about the cheapest I could find, £8 doesn't seem too bad I guess ;o £5 would of been better though :D

Ah well! Gonna order it around lunch time anyway unless I find somethnig better ;o
#19
Just a quick one

If u have a SD card reader i found this the best way to transfere all data off your original TomTom sd card save it in a folder on your desktop then re-copy to your new sd card ( this works 100% ) down to personal prefrence but u have a "full" backup then on your pc and your original sd card as well (plus its easy then just to add your poi's, speed cammera's,Voices, ect, ect

If you want the link for voices give us a PM and il send u a link to them
#20
Many thanks again for the reply (rep'd!) - I assumed the thing came with voices as standard?! How odd! :D
#21
Also, am I correct in thinking I'll need to buy a mains charger too? My dad's charger has double the voltage that a car would have so I'm pretty sure the charger that comes with it won't work. Or does it come with a mains charger?
#22
Also (sorry!) - do I definitely need the 2GB card? Apparently I should be able to delete the foreign voices on there and that'd free up plenty of space for the speed camera info?!

Buy it 1st and see what card they supply with it, you do get the standard Jand and John English voices with it but you can get cleb/after market voices. So Yoda could be telling you "Turn left you must hmm" or Ozzy saying "*&%&* *&%& %&*%&*%& &*%% left" :giggle:
#24
Hahah that's awesome, I'm very interested in checking some of those out! I'd love to have a Sega Rally style sat nav sound, haha!

Too late about the SD card btw, it's already been posted, ahh! DVD.co.uk is just too efficient :-)

Ordered that case now, but now I need to know whether it comes with a mains adapter or not really.
#25
All the tomtom1's need a new sd card to put extra's onto them

Deleting the voices does give you some room on the card but not alot, definatley worth getting a bigger sd card :-D

obtw u get all the chargers with the TT mains car etc etc
#26
I wish I could rep some of you guys a little more, alas, I'm all rep'd out right now! :) Thanks so much once again!
#27
just sorting out the speed camera's for you :santa:
#28
:X What a star!

The one thing I cannot understand for the life of me, is why the whole of TomTom's UK map coverage is 110mb, I'm downloading a file with loads and loads of voices which is 21mb, and I've just bought a 2GB card for it?! :P Surely I won't even come close to using that? Will I even use 256MB of it?

Also, are you sure it has a mains charger? The TomTom site doesn't look very promising! :(
#29
You should get a docking station which connects to the mains/usb port

Your sd card will be full with the other apps on there.

you need to get the latest data.chk file from here to get the speed cameras working correctly ( so it say 30mph 50 mph ect gatso tempory ect ect)

Here is the link for the speed cameras.

Excellent, you're a star! Thanks so much :-)

Do I just download the sounds from pocketgps world and then download that savefile upload? Or will I need to subscribe to that £19p/m thingymebob? (going to have to try and download htem at home, not having much luck at work, keeps timing out!)

Thanks once again, really appreciate it :D
#31
all you need to do is find the right data.chk file for your version of tomtom replace the one on you tomtom with the downloaded from PocketGPS then the speedcameras u have downloaded from me cut and past them into your map folder should all be okay then

You dont need to sign up for anything........

Heres another site that will make your splash screen look a bit better (start up screen)

Thanks for all this chuf....my son will be home on Friday with his TOM TOM ONE Europe....if I go ahead and apply the speed camera info I guess it has to be put into the GB map section only??
#33

#34
