I realise this has been asked a million times, and I've made the choice myself in the past, but things have changed since then.
Years ago, diesel was more reliable, more economic and generally better in every aspect except performance and refinement.
Now, with turbos, high pressure systems, dual mass flywheels and DPFs, diesel are different, as are petrols with progression in economy and reliability.
So, the question is, if you were to buy a new car (either brand new or used), what would you go for and why?
Also, for you mechanics out there, reliability wise, do you see more problems with diesel or petrol engined cars?

for what use case?

i.e. 5k miles per year round town

or

20k motorway miles per year

completely changes the answer.

as above. Longer distances better with Diesel. city run around petrol. I was told, as a guide, if you do more than 15k a year diesel is better....but it was by a car salesman!!!

All depends upon how many miles you drive. But generally nowadays, petrol wins.

When you factor in the extra purchase cost of diesel cars, higher diesel prices, higher servicing costs and the fact they are far more complex than many petrol engines, unless you do big miles it makes more financial sense to purchase a petrol.

Bearing in mind, the majority of diesel cars are fitted with the dreaded DPF system, if you only drive in town, then avoid diesels like the plague.

Diesel is now perceived to be anti-environmental with the outpouring of particulates. So, in future diesel prices will be taxed higher than petrol, and cities will load extra congestion charges on diesel vehicles, and car tax will be loaded up. So, the future is _not_ diesel!

Over 12k per year then diesel can become more cost effective, especially on larger cars, I have a Skoda fabia diesel estate and I get 67mpg. As I do around 15k a year it is great for my wallet. £40 of fuel gets me 535 miles range.

most new cars are fitted with EGR valves , & turbos whether diesel or petrol . Having owned diesels for the past 10yrs , my next car will be a petrol . newer diesels have been a royal pain in the back side , I do a mix of city / A road driving daily adding up to around 14 K miles a year . I've still had dpf / EGR issues (using premium fuel) diesels have got to driven hard , high revs to keep them from being blocked with carbon . I used to own VAG pd engine cars , never had an issue . so unless your on the motorway daily & thrash it I wouldn't advise a diesel. ( EGR valves are an issue for both petrol & diesel) can be £500+ to replace depending on location

I'd hope the government is operating on facts rather than perceptions.

The 'diesel tax' idea seems a bit implausible to me. I think it's far more likely that diesel and petrol will get taxed equally and electric and hybrid given the tax breaks. Exactly the same policy as at the moment basically, but at a reduced level sustainable for higher numbers of electric vehicles.

I've always drove petrol but I don't often do very long drives... school runs, 10 minutes here and there elsewhere... I still walk when I can at times. I never drive for more than 90mins trip if that and that's rare so never considered diesel car .

True regarding egr valves however they're more problematic on diesels as they clog up more, Petrol burns much cleaner in comparison.

All that soot/carbon in the diesel gradually clogs everything up, clogs your turbo, egr, intake manifold, dpf, catalyst, exhaust etc etc..

Town driving 100% petrol, Motorway 10K plus a year then diesel but petrols these days are getting close to diesel economy.

If you're leasing or you don't pay for the repairs then diesels are a much more attractive option.

Fair enough, so the consensus is higher mileage is for diesels, low mileage is petrol.
I'm airing on the side of petrol for my next purchase as I'm only doing about 6k a year in my car.
Although the diesels cost less on tax and mpg, my concern is that they are now less reliable.

I totally agree. The government would find it hard now to hit diesel users with a super tax given they have been encouraging people to go diesel for the last few years! Any tax will be applied to new cars purchased, rather than adjusting all diesel car tax or adding to fuel duty. Diesel congestion charge I can see happening though! Just as long as it stays in London, I couldn't care ;-)

If you are concerned about reliability but already have a car in mind, do some research and look up owner reviews.

I've had my diesel nearly three years now. Was initially used for doing deliveries, but stopped delivery work mid 2014 and been doing only town runs now, with the run up the motorway. I don't drive hard because I don't need to. Never had any problems due to it being a diesel, only faults common through all models.

As you've mentioned you will only be doing 6k a year, so petrol would make more sense. :)

I got a petrol concverted to lpg from a UK lpg approved garage around 650quid It cost maybe a better alternative to diesel I don't like diesel cars for some reason I get a headache after any long journeys in them
