AGP Card

My current computer is old and rather ******. It isn't even good enough for the games it should play without a problem at max resolution (such as Warcraft 3) due to the AGP slot seemingly working at PCI level for some reason, the reason most likely being that it's a Time computer.

I can live with my PC until Mike posts (if he still does) another Dell deal on par with some his past deals... My issue is with the noise my Ati 9600 Pro fan makes. It's getting worse and worse, either clicking constantly or just being very loud. I need to get a new card.

Anyway... Has anyone seen any cheap AGP cards being sold by a reliable merchant?
As you can imagine from reading my first paragraph, I'm not looking for a powerful card here - If it can match my current 9600 Pro it's fine by me since I need a new computer to play games.

I use the same card to play WOW, it does a reasonable job. I'd advise something a little faster if you are a 3D game fan.

I've got a Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB sitting around that I'd sell for £20 inc. pnp? 95% sure its working but I can pop it into my machine and take a look if you wish.

Would you happen to know how much more powerful that card is in comparison to my old 9600 Pro?

I was thinking of something like £20ish due to my AGP slot troubles. If it's a fair amount more powerful I'd get it for £37, though.

Since my AGP slot seems to be seriously working as a PCI slot that accepts AGP cards (unless it's the card - doubtful), there's probably not much chance of my comp handling WoW anyway - FFXI could choke it with my 9600 Pro!

I'd love it if it could, I've wanted to play WoW for ages, ever since my FFXI days. I would be playing it now if I hadn't had such bad luck with TWO Dell E520's...

Cheers for the offer but I'd rather not shop outside of stores online - Everything I've had off eBay and the like has had a problem of some variety. It's not worth the hassle, so I only do so if it's the only option.

No probs, if you take a look at TomsHardware then you can compare just about every card out on the market at the moment. The x1550 would be a suitable upgrade to the 9600Pro, and would be able to play most modern games, although without details set to the maximum. As for the card running at a low speed, have you tried reinstalling the motherboard drivers? This is usually where the fault occurs, althouh I understand there may be some difficulty in locating these if your PC is Time branded.

Yeah, I don't have the drivers and Time vanished long ago. The only thing I can do is buy a new computer really...and my last attempt at doing so ended in disaster.

I'll check up about the X1550 and decide tomorrow. I'm not sure if the graphic card quality matters too much when it's being hindered, but...

This X1650 Pro looks like a good deal:

512Mb [email protected], [email protected] for £47.67 inc postage

Comparable to a 7600 GS. Shame Dabs won't let on who actually manufactures the card.

I can offer a Quadro FX 1000 for say £30.

You may have missed it - the OP has already expressed his/her desire to buy from an online retailer....

Why not just disconnect the fan, and put an exhaust cooler on.

Quick search brings up http://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-Case-Exhaust-Video-Cooler/dp/B0000510SS i'm sure you can get one cheaper somewhere

Unfortunately, that won't be sufficient - it requires a cooler attached to the GPU chip. So the OP could install a replacement cooler instead - a compatible example would be item# 160179168102 or 160179297527 on eBay for £11-12, but I'm sure one can get a cheaper one than that.

new it was too good to be true - dabs got the specification wrong, listing their Dabs Value £41 X1650 Pro as having GDDR3 memory - they've since changed it to GDDR2. What they haven't done though is changed the listed memory clock speed, which is stated as 1400Mhz (obviously wrong for GDDR2 memory)
