I'm thinking about surprising my hubby with a break to Amsterdam for his birthday as we have both talked about going.

Firstly is it any good?
Secondly where can i get a good deal?

Ive done some searching but most of the reviews are awful!

Thanks in advance

Oh really?? Are there no nicer areas at all?

It's an amazing place to visit, I used to live in Holland and I still go back to Amsterdam all the time. There are many places to visit and the Red Light District is a must, even just for the experience.
I would look into getting a small apartment for your stay, they are nicer than a hotel room, mostly cheaper and you can sort out your own food/munchies. The GreenHouse Effect has some lovely studios/apartments so i would take a look on their website, also Craigslist has some excellent apartments/flats at really good prices, especially if you are booking last minute, I have often used this to find somewhere to stay and never been disappointed.

My advice is to do it, you will have a fab time :)

Have been twice in the last 3 years, and it is great, try visiting the village of Edam, the village of Voladam, also there are many things to do and see, Anne Franks house, art Museums, the beer museum, boats trips, casino, pleanty of nice bars, clubs, some great shopping areas, also if you want to splash out try staying at Fredrick house stayed there last year, costs a bit but well worth it, try looking at there website, and honestly just go and enjoy,

Thank you!

I'm looking to get a bargain really as i will be trying to pay for it myself even though i dont work. But the cheaper places are not very good!
Is it better to do a flight/hotel combi or book them seperately?

If you can book at trip there in the 70's or the 80's its G R E A T, but in the present, not so much. . .

Where can you fly from as you can get some really cheap flights depending on airport.

2 or 3 nights in october, can go from birmingham, stansted, luton and london

Thanks so much!!! Rep coming your way.

Looking at the pricing, your best bet would be to go from Stansted, at the moment if booked now you are looking at around £100.00 return for the two of you, as flights + taxes work out at around £25.00 each way which isn't too bad. You could sign up to Easyjets website and wait for an offer if you want to risk it, there normally is something later on in the year but you may not want to take that chance.
I will be back with more info on accom :)

What sort of money do you have to spend on accom?

Thanks!

I've seen deals with hotel and flights for under £300 so if i could do that it would be fab!

Well for 60 euros a night you can get a lovely one bed studio flat with tv and kitchen all to yourself. The studio is in dam square which is an excellent location.

Rail travel is also reasonable at 200 Euros return from London in total for 2. Don't book through Eurostar - they'll charge you a mint - you can use Dutch Highspeed Railways at http://www.nshispeed.nl/en although bookings are only available up to the 3rd October at the moment (3 months ahead maximum) - some of the booking process is in Dutch only (!) but its pretty simple really, if you struggle use babelfish.altavista.com or other online translator.

Amsterdam is beautiful - canals, picturesque bridges, great architecture and its also ugly/fascinating - red light areas and drugged/dishevelled youths spring to mind but the latter is no worse than Salzburg. You must eat Dutch pancakes - I recall them being huge and delicious. TBH it's a good place to wander round on foot without having anywhere in particular to go.
