microsoft security essentials (free) been using it for years with no problems
As Musician has said free ones are ok the best free seem to be Microsoft security essentials,Avast or Avira. If you want the best protection then Kaspersky pure really can't be beaten on detection and removal.
Bit defender total security free for 12 months chrck freebie section on this website i cant post link as on mobile or if you or a family member banks with barclays you can get kaspersky for free
Dont get Microsoft security essential that is awful even microsoft have said that. Free alternative combination is comodo firewall and avast
Do your own research and pick accordingly.
You will be none the wiser from a few ("expert")differing opinions here.

eg: MSE suggested... yet shortly it will be said don't get MSE

Comodo for me. Been using over 5 years and its matches or even beats (in tests) the paid antivirus software.

Click on free download
yes MSE has had poor reviews - not the best detection rates when tested in laboratory conditions and tested against premium AV r others like Avast that sometimes include additional (bloatware type) unnecessary addons (best you do some research on laboratory conditions.... as not everyone will ever need such protection)

But people who keep stating that Microsoft have pulled support or criticised it.s own MSE need to re-read the publicity and Microsofts response.

I've used MSE for many years without infection, it doesn't use much resources like some AV's and can be set to skip already scanned folders/files/processes but then again I don't download torrents or from sites where there is a possibility of infected files - common sense is all that's needed.

malware bytes does the job for me
malware bytes does the job for me

Probably does, but this about antivirus of which malwarebytes is not.
Open a Barclays bank account and request internet banking, you may have to log in a few times a year so they don't close it
Once logged in you can get a free Kaspersky internet security, which has always been good for me and I have been told is one of the best.
This is good for up to 3 computers, but if you need more a joint account gives you the same again so 6 computers.
You also get Kaspersky Mobile security for your phone but this is just for one phone per account(or 2 for a joint account).
You will have to renew it each year so you get the most up to date version.
I didn't know Antivirus fanboys exsisted lol.

1. Download Kaspersky 2013/14
2. Install
3. enter the following key

This will last you 2 months I do have other keys for Kaspersky so if this key doesn't work just reply to this.

Sorry if its only 2 months but the keys only have 3 months and 1 month has passed so that's why there is 2 months left.

Avast and malwarebytes running alongside should be more than enough. Not sure why Avast is getting voted down.
Avast is one of the top rated free AV programs available. MSE was very good but not anymore.

Avira is also pretty decent if you don't like Avast for some reason, there's lots people will recommend and slate but Avast does seem to be be one of the best.
I use Avast free.
I do back it up a random Malwarebytes every month or so, but so far in about 5 years of use I've not had any trouble.
Thanks everyone for the answers I'm going to use avast
