I would have thought that speaking to the banks and clarifying that you don't have a bank account to switch would allow them to offer you the bonus.

Alternatively open any bank account and then just switch it to the bank you want.

Clarify what you mean op? Why can't you do a switching account? You're unlikely to get a bonus unless you switch.

I do not currently have a joint bank account (account held jointly by 2 persons), so have nothing to switch from.

Why don't you just switch to the bank of your choice as the sole account holder, then once that new account is up and running, add the other person as the joint account holder?

You could always open a joint account (probably with a bank you currently bank with would be easiest), and then once it's open, switch it. There's no minimum duration that an account must be open for, before it can be switched and claim a switching bonus. I've created several 'donor accounts' with Barclays.
