Would you not be interested in building one yourself? You could get a rig a lot better than the prebuilt ones you posted for the same amount if you bought the parts and put it together yourself :).

is that still the case these days? But tbh i wouldn't be confident with a self build. I'm happy with pre-built and i prefer the warranty aspect too.

The prices on the builds you posted look pretty good to me.

PCpartpicker puts an I5-6400 at £165. The cheapest 4GB 960 is £174, and the cheapest 1080 is £560. Throw in a copy of Windows (unless you go the Ebay route), and a self-build matching your first and third links are £424 (£599 in the link) and £810 (£999 in the link) respectively. That's before you start adding a case, power supply, RAM and hard drive. An SSD would be nice on them, but they seem like good value for what they are. Given that the third link is about £400 more than the first being more or less equal aside from the graphics card, and the difference between a 1080 and 960 is about the same, I'd say they're fairly equal value for money wise.

Depends what sort of experience you're looking for really. If you're looking at playing games at 1080p, then the 960 is probably fine - get the first, use the spare cash on an SSD and some games. From what I read, the 1080 isn't quite consistent as a 4k card, but it's up there. If that's not what you're aiming for, the third would be overkill.

But there is a £50 discount code for this model - so possibly £974 - any good?

Also, for my lad, i have seen this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/401176337161?clk_rvr_id=1106520084369&rmvSB=true

He is after a gaming PC, but we cannot afford a similar spec to the above - would this run the likes of The Culling, CS GO etc?
