I'm not 100% but assuming that hostels are for the people that live in that country and not for tourist ...Barcelona cheap enough as it is we went last year and payed £120 for two weeks hotel so can't imagine that It would be that expensive for 3 nights

Have you looked at Generator Hostel? Stayed in a few of these in various cities and these are really nice

Depends what you want to see although Barcelona is pretty compact with most of the touristy bits easily accessible. Subway system is also makes it easy to get around. I would suggest researching what you want to see and work from there.

residence Erasmus Gracia is a good place to stay ( just
got back from there) It's about a mile and half from the centre but just a 2 minute walk to metro. All rooms have private bathrooms and big and clean

I used to live there and some hostels were used more by the homeless, well the ones next to para lel metro I know for sure, not that hostels are exclusive to travellers anyway. Have you looked into air bnb too?
The hipstel is a good option, it's close to the Sagrada familia/mercat Dels encants and closest metro is passeig de gracia which is a nice area with it not far from las ramblas. I haven't used it so I'm going off trip advisor.
Also when you get there get a T10 ticket for metro/bus. It's valid for 10 trips rather than paying €2.95 or whatever for one trip, it costs €9.95. You get them from the ticket machines and they have various language options.
Get the A2 bus to placa espanya from the airport and you're good to go as its a main metro stop, you'll see the stairs leading to it. There's an 'express' bus to and from the airport but it's about €5 each way and I personally don't see the point in it. There's free wi-fi mostly everywhere out there too!
The airport isn't as close to things like Barceloneta or the gotik area so you may be in for a long walk or trip.
Enjoy your stay in BCN it's a beautiful place with so many things to do! & If you've been before I hope my rambling is still of use haha. Bon viatge!!

My lad stayed in the sun and moon hostel last year with his mates and they are going back in a couple of months time. He said it was in a great location so might be worth you having a look at their website :)

Stayed for 3 nights last year in the summer... Air BnB worked out cheaper than some of the hostels around!
Have a look there :)
