Planning my OH's bday surprise ... One possibility is the Eurostar Paris deal so I just checked on M&S Bureau d Change :

Rate 1.2186
Sterling 500.57
gives me Euro 610

The exchange rate is mad! Should have bought more when it hit the lowest some time last year .... We're also going to Barcelona in July so will defo need the euros one way or another.

Any tips or good rates or ideas where to exchange in London / Paris / Barcelona?

look at this thread: http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/181982/us-dollars/

you can get good rates in two ways:

1. Get forward rate: currently crownexchange quoting 1.246 for +51 days pick up (http://www.crowncurrencyexchange.com/content/euros.asp) or you can get 1.25 now at http://www.thomasexchangeglobal.co.uk/

2. Get a Nationwide Debit Card for two reasons:
- they dont charge overseas cash withdrawal (but the overseas bank may for a small amount)
- the rate you get by withdrawing US$ overseas is an interbank rate which will most certainly be higher than the high street rate (e.g. last month I got 1.98 by withdrawing US$ from Bank of America ATM in New York. The high street rate at the time was 1.90)

I always draw from abroad using a Nationwide debit card.
You get the bank's spot rate so it will always be better than any exchange rate.
Don't be fooled by 0% commission because their margin is bult into the buy-sell spread.

the banks may charge but Nationwide do not pass on the charge to you.
I drew Euros from a remote place in Spain and although the cash machine had a charge attached, this was not passed onto me.

kippy, my daughter has been using Nationwide flex card since Feb on round the world trip, hasn't been charged yet for any withdrawals and has used it extensively and in loads of different countries.

I use my Nationwide debit card in the ATM's abroad too, but I always like to have some currency with me just to get me started so I can get straight on to my accomodation.
I've found "Thomas Exchange Global" to give the best non-advance rates - currently quoting 1.25 Euros. They have branches in Victoria and the Strand or you can order online at thomasexchangeglobal.co.uk and they will send it to you (but you have to pay £5 postage costs). Hope this helps.
