TV is a Samsung UE50K6020 and the remote seems to be a small cheap thing. It does have ABCD buttons in various colours though, giving me hope!

Can I ask why you're having to change this setting? Is it because you have a sound bar or av receiver by any chance? If so, and your TV and sound device supports them, connect them together with their ARC HDMI ports instead.

I have optical headphones (transmitter type) and I switch from listening using those and watching the TV using the TV's speakers.

Just thinking more about this, is there any iPhone app that would do the same job? I see loads now that I've done an app search. So many though, not sure which have this feature..

You need to search for one that will do macro's.

Daft question, but can't you just mute the telly?
As far as I was aware, the optical output isn't volume controlled, its' just on all the time. I'd assume that the wireless headphones have a volume control on there somewhere?
