My daughters old laptop could do with a ram upgrade but not sure which ram we need. Have tried crucial but none available. The laptop is
Esystem 3086
Intel Celeron m420 1.6ghz
512mb ram
40gb hdd

Would I have to get rid of the 512mb or could i just add 1mb in the spare bank?
Can anybody help or even post a link to some cheap compatible ram?
Many thanks.

It might be old SD RAM. Sometimes where I've not been sure with older PC's I find it more reliable to just take the cover off the PC Unit and take a look for yourself. RAM usually has a printed label on it, telling you various bits of information. It will give you the chance to check the model of the motherboard too, so that you can ensure you get the right type of RAM and how many free RAM slots/banks there are, for future upgrades

Cheers meandog, didn't want to start taking it apart at the mo, you have to take the keyboard off. Really only want to do it once. Will wait to see if anybody else can help, if not will take the safe approach and do as you advise. Thanks and rep added.

run this program, should give you a quite detailed report on all the ins and outs of your laptop, http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php if you then report back with the stats etc, im sure myself or someone else could help you much more easily :)

If I go for some would a 1gb stick work ok alongside a 512mb stick or am would it be be quicker to buy 2x512mb matched. Also with it saying 4200 speed would lower speeds work ok or would I be best going for the same.
Thanks for any help:thumbsup:

ram is backwards compatible, so getting faster ram wont have any difference, only the bonus that you could take it out and use it in a newer laptop in the future. matched pairs run faster, but again with minimal bonus' if you can i would suggest 2x 1gb sticks, however 1gb with 512mb is the next best :)
