Hi
has anyone bought a cheap chinese smart watch of ebay or ali express? my son has asked for one for christmas an hes only 11 so its only for basis stuff like time and messages etc and its all a bit of a gimmick i think but they are less than a tenner and hes struggling to tell the time properly and i was hoping this would persuade him to wear a watch more and learn.
any thoughts or experience?
cheers

and really like it, understated but works well for messages , calls etc... in fact you can link it to any app on your phone, and the battery lasts me 2 weeks ( light user)

Get a Pebble instead, one of the best smartwatches and the battery lasts 5-7 days. Can probably get an old one cheapish on ebay. I'll be listing a Brand new Black Pebble Time for £80 this week if you're interested.

Yes crap you'll need to recharge it everyday if not more. Unless he has a real reason to use it don't bother.

Ouch, does that take you like 5 minutes to read a more than one word by the time it scrolls across? I've peoples names in my phone that are longer than the number of characters that can display, in fact I can only think of one that isn't "Mum". On the China/Import front, think big, think big on his/her wrist, think charging all the time, think custom apps not google wear compatible, think only few watch faces available, think requiring custom app to be downloaded containing dear knows what downloaded from a website and not google play. Think no integration with other apps, slow and gluggish gui if anything a cheap clone will put him off tech.
I'd go with DCX's suggestions of the Pebble.

I know you don't want to spend too much in case he doesn't take to it but you can get a Pebble SmartWatch currently in Argos for £50 (checked stock and plenty in my area - N.Ireland)
Argos - Pebble

CEX for around £30-£35 Grade A
CEX Pebble

Or how about going down the line of a fitness band and they also show the time. The likes of the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 around £20 ish if you don't mind ordering from China.
