Hi everyone,

First of all, I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas!

Is Gearbest.com a safe and secure website to purchase a phone from?
I've seen that they have some pretty decent Chinese manufacturerd phones and I am thinking of ordering one, but I've never ordered from this website before...
I've heard of it, but I would like to know how people have fared when purchasing.
I'm also a little confused how import duty works, so if someone could help me out please that would be much appreciated!

Thank you

Loads of Gearbest deals on here. You can occasionally select which "warehouse" despatches product and there is a Euro warehouse option (product URL suffix ?wid=3) so no import fees. Otherwise import fees = VAT + circa £10 handling fee may apply on orders above £15, but highly unlikely import fees will be levied unless you chose the big name couriers such as DHL / UPS as delivery agents. Some customers hate; some love; most tolerate. There is a formal Gearbest rep allegedly named Alice who pops up on HUKD when any post is detrimental to the business, and Alice typically makes the right noises to assist resolve any issue. Fill your boots.

Have it shipped by post and you're 99% sure to avoid any tax as they list the value at $20. If you have it shipped via carrier (DHL ect) you will always get hit for tax, vat and the carriers 'processing' fee for paying the tax for you. . .

I bought with promise of 4-5 day free delivery. I was hit by £41.30 fee from DHL who didn't provide ANY paperwork to confirm what the fee was for - just a COD sticker. I've been unable to get DHL to confirm what the charges are for. So I give the Supplier 10/10 and DHL 0/10. Beware DHL.

I bought a phone from them in mid-November, when it arrived someone had stolen the phone from the packaging.
While I can't blame them exclusively for the situation, could early have been someone from yodel, I contacted them in early December and am still waiting for them to resolve the issue. :(

Only negatives are potential custom fees and if you ever need to return something, 99% of the time a return isn't really a viable option as it costs a fortune for us to post and they often conveniently go missing, It only costs them a a couple of pence to post as they're heavily subsidised by the government.

I've never had anything fail to turn up yet.
