Hi all

I'm paying £15mo + £7mo for sky fibre max and line rental currently. Not a bad price, but before you say it's a great deal...I can only get 33mb or so on my broadband due to no fibre in my street? I'm looking to leave sky due to the crap broadband connection I'm getting. My wifi disconnects at least once an hour and when I rang sky they said no issues on our tests, if you want a new router gotta pay 40 quid. To replace their router?!

Any route, I'm thinking 33 down 5 up isn't fast enough for me, my phone is slow browsing, and I do occasionally game on pc and xbox. I also do download game updates regularly and these are slow.

Can anyone recommend a good priced replacement broadband company I could go to? Am I stuck with going to virgin sin e sky said max speed my line can deliver is 33mb?

thanks

Tbh the speed 33MBs and 5MBs should be good enough for online gaming ( Ive played competitive pc games over 13 years from 56k till now) I suspect your router sucks as you said, I have a Asus dongle and Router on WiFi and get great ping. Find the ip of your connection out, If it's dropping connection it will be changing, where as your connection to your Router is should be something like 192.168.1.123 so ignore that one

unless you have virgin plumbed in on your street you will struggle as sky etc all use bt lines so that's probably the max speed for your line .
so whomever you go with it won't be any quicker

Best on the UK market is virgin media hands down. I have the largest broadband and at this time a night hit 192mb down and 13 up. Perfect for a busy household ( 2 children and a wife who loves netflix)

I love when people complain about only getting 33MB of download speed. I get 5MB.. :|:p

33mb 5mb must be fibre as adsl 2 isnt capable of delivering that fast and sky only use their own equipment in openreach exchanges

buy a sky modem off eBay or get them free in gumtree. if you are in Glasgow I think in have a spare somewhere. Def have a sagem one and should have the black one.before sky q as well.

Changed to EE from sky recently.. Had a similar flaky connection with Sky. Since being on EE it's been rock solid. No issues myself with EE..
You can also find TCB give you about £100 if you move.

I am trying to change from virgin broadband only £34 a month i am fed up trying to get it working every day it goes off and i have to press the button agg tonight i tried to cancel as my year is up and they kept cutting me off I was signed up for a 100 and only get 33 so I wouldn't go there

Guessing you have changed the filters, isolated the modem for a period of time and used the test socket to eliminate issues in your wiring?

Lol only 33mb

Simply turn off the wifi on the sky router and use a decent access point instead. Sky routers have always had terrible wifi.
Changing providers will have zero effect on your fibre speed as everybody has to use the same BT lines etc, unless you have virgin in your area

If your wifi is disconnecting then I would assume you have a conflict? Personally I would go into the router and test every wifi channel for the best one, takes time but worth it in the end. Depending what your connecting it could be the device, or drivers etc, so may not actually be the router at fault

I have put a new filter on from sky and been through every wifi channel which has made no difference. Also I've done speed tests which are pretty constant and it's still slow AF on my phone browsing. So yeah I don't think the speed is fast enough and getting kicked off wifi all the time is annoying.

So is my only choice virgin?

if you're getting 33mbps on speed tests and browsing is slow then the issue is not your dl speed

What could it be? My powerline adapter also gets same speed but slow browsing?

Wow. I browse, game and stream Nowtv perfectly on a smidge over 3.5mbps! 33 not enough? Also, as you say, the price you pay is pretty damn good. I pay more than that for normal ADSL bb. However, the constant dropping is not so good for you. I can't even recollect the last time my connection ever dropped and that's in years. Could well be router troubles. Could try a reset and update of firmware? With Talk Talk, they can do the updates remotely for you.

I am in the same boat, my internet disconnects with sky and it is so annoying. I have two months left in my contract and I am definitely going to change provider. I was thinking should I phone and tell them they are not providing me with reliable service and as I am paying for it either do something about it free of charge or cancel my contract early?

I have gone down the engineer visit to check the line and it turned out fine. Filters are on etc.
