The iPhone's home button does not work at all for starters.
But frequently the screen totally goes black (not even the vibrate on the side vibrates when it goes totally black?)
When it does this it can take ages to come back on but it eventually does go back to normal (bar the home button not working of course)
What could this be?
I was thinking about replacing the whole front panel which should fix the home button and maybe the screen? but i was not sure if it was the screen because it does not vibrate when it goes black?
Thank you

upgrade the software first before you do anything

Give us a clue. Which model is it?

If the screen normally works then probably not that. Is it warm when it happens. Could be faulty battery. If its a 5S then give up on it. My daughters crashes like that every so often but could be anything. When it does it I normally wait for 15mins then press the home and power button together for about 10 seconds to bring it back to life (but you do not have a working home button).

Another option is to take to an Apple store. They can plug in and give you some diagnostic information which may or may not help (it did not help us).

The home button should be easy. Its most likely a cable not replaced properly (which would suggest its had a screen replacement at some point). Has it ever worked for you? If you buy a screen its easier to buy a complete assembly but if it is a 5S or above you will need to swap home button parts over to keep the fingerprint recognition.

Take it to an Apple Store? They may be able to fix it for you or swap it for a working one

If it's a finger sensor home button if it's replaced anywhere other than an Apple Store your phone will never be able to update again.

Thank you for everyone's help. I have now decided to purchase a new phone.

Nothing has been replaced on the phone, I have had it since it was new and it is a 5s.

Replacing the home button removes the fingerprint sensor but even if you do, you can still update. So you're talking out your **** pal.
