Has anyone replaced the nexus 5 screen ?

Hi.
My son has dropped his nexus 5 (d821) phone and its cracked quite badly and needs replacing.
I have replaced a few digitizers on older android phones/iphones so know a little about doing it,
i looked online and most sites recommend changing the digitizer and can't find any mention of just swapping the glass screen.
Has anyone managed to replace just the screen not the digitzer and is it a case of just using a heat gun, cleaning,re applying new screen?
If anyone has any links that could help as i'm struggling to find anything of any use
cheers

Not really the reply you want, but I find it better just to replace both the screen and touchscreen in one, a lot less mucking about.

Yeah i agree but as he's paying for it out of his part time wages he's hoping to keep the costs down :)

You may beable to pick up a faulty n5 and replace it, could be a bit cheaper.

I understand what your saying but phones today are very different to the ones in the past. I've done a few screen replacements in my life and tbh I wouldn't bother trying it on a Nexus or any newish phone as the front glass and digitizer are extremely close. I think some are bonded together now and I'd suggest getting the the main part of the phone that includes the front glass, digitizer and just swapping over the mainboard, battery, etc etc. Still not cheap though.

Yeah i think you are all right with swapping the digitizer looking at a video i found it would take ages to get all the little pieces of broken glass off the frame :(

Not recommend. I ordered and paid for the screen and digitizer and swapped them both over. It would have been the worst nightmare ever splitting these two without any sort of damage. New nexus 5 screen is about close to £100 including fitting in some places.

The glass and LCD are fused to the display frame. Fixing broken glass will be either expensive or very difficult.

Otherwise it's fairly easy to do.

As a side point, would it be worth him considering another phone (selling the N5 for parts). Just saying as it's worth considering.

I've cracked the screen and digi on mine, where were you able to get it all in fixed for £100? I've been quoted £150+, might aswel buy a new handset.

How difficult was it doing it yourself?

the digi and screen combo don't look too bad to swap as long as you have a steady hand :)
the cheapest digi and screen I've found is for roughly £65 from a high rated eBay seller ,
as for a shop doing it I'm not sure guess £100 is not a bad mark up as they are probably paying less than what I would for the screen

Planet Mobile in Merry Hill (Dudley) were doing it for that.

I have also seen these guys doing it for £115

Have you spoken to the Carphone Warehouse about a repair and how much it would cost ? They repair the nexus 5.

And these guys have quite good feedback.

I know a repair from LG themselves must be around the £120 mark as that was the cost to repair my Nexus 4 when I cracked the screen.
