From trying out iPad Minis in shops I think this is the size/aspect ratio I want for a tablet, but I want Android as the OS.

The only two tablets like this I can find are the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 and the ASUS ZenPad S 8.0 Z580C. The Samsung seems a lot better (CPU, AMOLED screen, RAM, Internal Storage and possibly battery as well), but the price now seems to be a lot more than people were getting them for in deals a year ago. I think the new Samsungs coming out this year won't have 4:3 aspect ratio, although I'm not 100% sure of that.

Ideally, I had thought I'd be willing to pay £150-250. I didn't realise choice was so limited. I would be willing to buy them second hand from a reputable place if they were in very good condition (I've never used CEX before, is it ok?) I'm not fussed about 3G/4G, I'm ok with just wifi.

Any advice? Any tablets I've missed or tablets about to be released that anybody knows about? Thanks. :)

Hmm, might have been wrong about the 4:3 of the new Samsungs. :) Is it best to wait? The Tab S2 specs are fine for me, I don't need them to be any better, but maybe the Tab S2 price will drop after the Tab S3 launches. Or it might mean they stop selling the S2 and I've be left with only the S3 as a (more expensive?) option. Does Samsung tend to work the way Apple does in this respect?

Why a 4:3 aspect ratio?

What about the nvidia shield?

NVIDIA SHIELD K1 - 8-Inch Full HD Tablet (Black) - (192 Core Tegra K1 Processor, Micro SD Card up to Additional 128 GB, 4K Ultra HD Ready) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0171BS9CG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_OvKDybKAZC51G

Lot of bang for your buck there.

Thanks. That does look good except I'd really like a tablet with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 (not 2016 model)
I have one and it is brilliant. And the 8.0" 4:3 ratio is perfect for a tab. The new one this year is 16:9

I guess the only thing you can do is hope for a drop in prices or put in a request in the For Sale/Trade part of HUKD or look on eBay

Thanks. Is the difference between the 2016 and the previous one just a slight CPU upgrade? So doesn't matter too much probably. :)
Argos are selling refurbs on eBay for £270. CEX are selling the EE ones for £240 https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SSAMTABT719EVEA#.WHZNLWVYJaT maybe I should go with CEX. I've not used it before. I assume EE is just like the Wifi one but with added potential for using data if I unlock it...

May be worth looking at the Hudl 2 on ebay.

Btw, does your Samsung Tab S2 make noise when it turns on or has low battery? If so, can those be turned off? Thanks. :)

I think its way comfier to hold (based on my experience holding my now-sold Hudl 2 and holding ipad minis in-store). Also I'd mainly use it for web browsing in vertical orientation, and YouTube videos/short videos where I don't think 4:3 in horizontal orientation would be an issue. Plus I'd just like to try it since I've already had a less squarey tablet. :)

Thanks, :) but I actually just sold my Hudl 2. I didn't like the aspect ratio and it would sometimes restart on its own and wake me up* (the turning on sound couldn't be turned off as far as I could tell.) Another big issue was that the battery often wore down slower than the device could actually charge. :( I had sent it to them to look at and they said the battery was fine... I never really used it because of those issues which meant that using my Android phone or computer was usually less hassle unless I just wanted to lounge in bed with the power cord plugged in watching long videos (which wasn't often).

Hudl 2 is really great value for money but (for anyone else who had the battery issues) it's probably just worth using if they don't have a computer or smartphone (kids, etc), or someone who likes to bring a tablet into the Living Room or watch videos on short commutes etc, where they don't have a PC there or they want to use a bigger screen than their phone. :)

*I'm a light sleeper and I want to store my tablet in my bedroom not the living room/somewhere else, so I suppose that's why it was an issue for me.

The Tab A 2016 is 16.9 (a change from the previous one).

The Tab S2 is 4.3, and always has been. The first Tab S was 16.9

I have the 9.7 Tab S2, and it doesn't make any noise at all.

Would recommend a Nexus 9 (8.9 inch screen) if you can still get one. Had one for 2 years before sellingvas battery began to go. Also the Pixel C if you can find one cheap enough.

Defo stick with 4.3 though. I was on my mums Tab A (2016) tablet at the weekend, and it didnt feel right. One of the reason's why the ipad is the worlds best selling tablet.

The Tab S2 is a lot higher spec than the Tab A in that link. Also the 2016 Tab A (UK spec) is also higher-but 16.9 (10.1 inch) screen.

The UK eqiuvilant to that one, is the Tab E- the cheapest, but is very low res screen, with low spec processor and Ram.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2, A and lately S3 are 4:3 screen ratio tablets. The tab A is the cheapest one.
You can also look at chinese ones.
