Need to replace my grandad's 1960's binoculars which he uses to look at ships out of his living room window. The binoculars are 8x40 and hardly seems to magnify anything at all!!

cameras2u do a Bushnell 10x50 for 41.99 - is that any good???

You will not notice much difference in magnification but the 50mm lens will provide a brighter image. The Bushell are a reasonable budget choice.

For sea viewing you need higher magnification - although these become difficult to hold steady - example

A telescope might be a better option for your purpose...

this one is good value
