I am looking to propel myself into the 21st century soon by purchasing a smartphone. I find the Samsungs etc way too expensive for what they are when there are lots of good alternatives (usually Chinese brands, though not necessarily) around the £100-£150 mark.

In terms of what I need, I want relatively good looks (even though most phones nowadays are just boring in terms of looks), good enough specs that day-to-day use isn't laggy (however, I only really use my phone for e-mail/sms/phone, and would also use whatsapp), and don't need too much storage as I don't download photos, videos etc and like to keep my phone free of clutter (but at the same time, it would be nice to have a decent amount of storage just to have the flexibility).

I have seen some of the Cubot phones and they look quite nice, but was wondering if you guys had any thoughts.

Much appreciated.

Bought 3 Cubots from Debenhams online - they seem great - even come with a protective case. Dual sim for £60 each - the recipients are very happy with them.

The ZTE NUMBIA 7 seems like amazing value for the money. I would buy it if I did not have a phone already. check out the youtube reviews.

Xiaomi mi5, can be had for quite cheap and had flagship level performance. The phone is actively also receiving updates.

I have a Huawei p9 lite. It was meant to be a stop gap phone when my opo died and I ended up just keeping it. Really good for my needs anyway. Camera is pretty crazy but I have a Canon 6d for that stuff.

I got one of these X6 Pros from Amazon a few weeks ago and can not fault it. 4G, Android 5.1, MediaTek MT6735P Quad-core 1Ghz (64bit), Mali-T720 GPU, 2GB RAM, 16GB Storage, expandable SD card and It's dual sim. Great value at £65.99. http://www.review-hub.co.uk/doogee-x6-pro-review/

the redmi note 3 is a very good value phone, if you get the global version it's set for regular ota updates. I can only assume the redmi note 4 will be more of the same

Xiaomi have just announced a snapdragon 625 based international version for the Indian market. This means that it will have band 20 too. I'd hold out for that one

Motorola customer service is awful and there is a known problem - ghost touch - with Moto G4. I've been trying to get caught refund for months and they're refusing, even though they're in breach of the Consumer Rights' Act.

If you do go for a Motorola I would strongly advise that you buy it from a reputable third party retailer, rather than directly from Motorola.

My Moto G4 is unusable and I am waiting for a refund from my credit card provider. I have a Cubot Max arriving tomorrow.

Using this phone now. I am very critical and am wholly bowled over by this phone. Exceptional value and build quality. No NFC and weak low light camera but then you can't expect the world for this money.

You think the camera is bad on this?? Try the original Note !!

Some of this may be firmware related, MIUI 7 screwed up the camera on the old Note, making all of the main camera photos blurry; MIUI 8, and everything is pin-sharp again.

The only real downside to the Note3 SE is that it is slightly longer than the original Note3, so none of the cases fit properly, and so far, no one is making cases especially for them.

I think all brands try and get away without honoring their warrentee. I have been in a dispute with mircrosoft since October and just keep getting fobbed off. Had a similar with Samsung before. This is why I have now bought a cheaper non-branded phone - I would be able to buy several replacements if they do not honor their warrentee and still be better off than buying a branded one.

They say that the only circumstances in which their warranty requires them to give a refund is when you have had the phone for 14 days or less. Even if that is true, their warranty does not entitle them to refuse to honour their obligations under the Consumer Rights' Act. Hence why reputable retailers acknowledge this by stating 'this does not affect your statutory Rights'.

The fact that Motorola don't say this is telling.

Smart Ultra 7 would be my choice.
