Best data sim to use abroad?

Asking here again as the response to my last question was really helpful :D

I'm going travelling and need internet access whilst I'm away. I barely ever text or call people anymore, just do everything through the internet by using various apps and online services.

I'm keen to get a data sim which has > 1GB of allowance that would work anywhere in France, Spain, Italy, Germany etc. I've been around every single mobile shop in town but none of the staff can suggest anything worthwhile that won't cost less than £3 per day. I'm going for 5 weeks so this is a bit steep for me.

Does anybody know of any providers that offer cheap data in Europe?

Cheers

Yep, try Three.

After a quick read it looks like you can use the same package here when you go abroad. For example with a PAYG sim, you need to be with them for more than 30 days and need to convert you credit to an Add On - a £15 add on has Unlimited Data and lasts for 30 days.

typed a long response with lots of options then it disappeared.
long story short, there's not much you can do.

wifi at hotels, cafes etc - do the majority of your data usage there if possible e.g. download and cache maps, update apps (if needed) etc.

buy a local sim for each country. may not be ideal if you're in a country for a few days only. Think most countries give you 1gb allowance for ~€10-15 on payg. each country varies

use three's at home if you go to any of those countries. again you have to work out if you're there long enough for it to be worthwhile. think you also have to sign up 1 month in advance before you can roam

there's a EU data cap of €0.20 per mb (ex vat). still a complete RIP OFF!! for someone with 6gb data allowance in the UK, they'll pay ~£1200 for the same usage on the continent.

there are cross-border data sims that give you 1gb for £60. I personally think this is priced so because they know the market is expensive. It's not great value, but it's cheaper especially for those taking in many countries. pretty sure it's 1 month expiry too.

i am also a data addict and have got by fine with wifi offerings. I mainly travel to main/capital cities and only select hotels with wifi. i do all my communicating through apps (e.g. viber, Skype, whatsapp, iMessage, tugo, bt smart talk), keeping in touch with the world (Facebook, news etc), loading maps (google maps) when i have free wifi back at the hotel, then if i ever need something urgent, there's always a caff, hotel, restaurant, pub, bar or shop with free and sometimes open networks that you can latch on to briefly.

if you're travelling (rather than working), you're not going to want to spend that long on the phone so you can definitely get by without local data. as much as i'd like to be connected 24/7, i'm not going to be ripped off for what i get at home for pennies

Anyone know how the 3 feel at home payg option actually works- I assumed £10 credit would be used as 321 pricing ie 1p/mb, but they say you need to buy an addon which only gives 500mb/£10. It can't be both, surely?

Are you on O2 monthly contract by any chance. They only charge £1.99 each day for data usage in Europe.
#7
It's one of those travel bolt ons they have
#8
no, unfortunately not with the 3-2-1.
i thought the same, but as someone mentioned above, you have to buy an add-on for PAYG
for contracts, you can you use tariff allowances BUT pretty sure you have to have been a customer for 30 days to have roaming activated.
i added a sim only to my existing account and was allowed to roam immediately. however it's not automatic (as i think it is with other networks) and forgot to activate it before my holiday, so couldn't receive calls/texts whilst I was last away

Hmm really not sure what to do. I'm currently on a sim only 1 month rolling contract with Tesco. Just spoke to the person on live chat and they said that data costs 45p/MB in the EU and £8/MB outside the EU. HOW CAN THEY CHARGE THIS MUCH FOR DATA? :'(

The mentioned 'Three - Feel at Home' covers 2 of the countries you mention I believe, Italy and France (from Tuesday 1st July). Details here.

Otherwise I'd recommend picking up local SIMS. Check your phone is unlocked first.

What sort of accommodation will you bve staying in? Wi-fi (mainly free) is pretty much a given in most accommodation from hostels to five star hotels........or at least you can check for it before booking?
