Best desktop PC for under £450?

Hi,
Anyone know of the best deal for a desktop PC around £450 - £500?

I'm looking for something equal to or better than this:

AMD dual core processor
250mb sata hard drive
1gig memory
17" TFT monitor

Preferably windows XP or Vista

It needs to be the complete set up with all the cables etc. I am from Birmingham and willing to travel up to 30 miles to get the right deal.

Thanks in advance!

P.s I've tried currys, dixons, pcworld, dell and several others. This deal was offered to me by a local computer shop. Just trying to see if I can better it.

sorry I meant 250GB hard drive - thanks for pointing it out.

Not to good with technical stuff so you'll have to bear with me!

thanks currychops!
might take a print out of this listing to my local comp shop and ask if they can do any better... always worth a try!

I doubt they'll match that...be careful as they may try it on with a lower specced rig..the core 2 CPU is worth about £125. the ram about £50. the monitor about £95..so for £500 it's good value.

Hi mate, how much is the local computer shop charging you for the spec you have listed?

You can get the same spec for less than £400 mate.

I will find it now, it has been posted on the forums loads in the last month.

Right mate:
Dual Core 3800, 160gb hard drive, 1gb ram, dvd writer, Microsoft media Center with free Vista upgrade.
Just £299. Just add it to your cart.
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/116052/rb/24298109571

Then add this to your cart, Massive Belinea 20.1" TFT at £148.04.
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/115013/rb/25068160092

You total is now £447.04 delivered. (If you wanted it below £400 just add a 17" tft from eBuyer instead of this 20.1".)

The only thing is you are getting a smaller 160gb hard drive than your local computer shop BUT you are getting a massive 20.1" tft monitor and paying less for the package.

If you can spend up to £500 I would add a graphics card in there too just to help Vista run Aero smoothly when you upgrade to it.

I would go for this card to keep your cost as close to your £500 as possible, at just under £56 it puts your price on £503 for the whole package which I doubt your local shop will match:
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/119698

The reason I have opted for that card is becuase it runs on gddr3 which makes it very fast indeed. Nothing in that price range can touch it.

Thanks beerman!
Great reply!

Comp shop is offering this:
AMD dual core 3.800 cpu - £125
1 gig DDR2 - £85
250 gig sata hard drive - £70
mother board - £50
Case etc - £33
20" second user TFT - £85

so £448 in total - then he'll put it together and load my OS

Wanted to see if get more for my money anywhere else before i commited to buy.

Might buy a decent tower and just get him to fit better hard drive and memory in to it. TFT is coming from him.

really overpriced IMHO

That rig is the same as this
http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=355232 £299.99

so you're being charged £85 for a second hand monitor when you can have a brand new one here that is probably a higher spec
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/115013/rb/25128252805

alterantively..and if you are not interested in playing action games..what about this package which has a really neat base unit?
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/123447/rb/25128334588 £449.99

However I appreciate you may wish to shop local and have the assurance that you have somewhere you can go if anything goes wrong during the warranty period.

1.5% quidco from ebuyer...3.5% quidco from Comet...all have free postage

Good price on the tft. Saving of £70 on new. What spec is it though. If it is any higher than 16ms response you will get eye ache, even your mouse pointer will blur over the screen and when scrolling web pages the whole screen will blur and hurt your eyes. Also movies and games will not be great.

Just buy this, Ebuyer have put the price up by £10 since last time but never mind:
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/116052

At just £309.99 delivered you are getting the same as what he is giving but with a lower hard drive. but that is not a problem, if itever gets filled up just put another one in there. ;)

Then buy the monitor off him and for less than £400 you have a full system.

Obviously you are wanting to put a good graphics card in there.

You can either do that now, or wait till it's his borthday or something and spend £100 or so on a decent one. The onboard graphics should see him over for the time being, it will play sims so that won't be a problem. (At least I think it would, onboard is better in this day and age compared to onboard graphics of old).

Ooopps Curry beat me to it.

And if ti is in stock get the one from Comet, it is £10 cheaper. I am sure it was outof stock yesterday, or that may have been another store.

EDIT:

If you opt for the later one in Curry's post be careful as it is a small case and you may struggle to find a graphics card that will fit. You will have to pay more for a half height card I would imagine. Not 100% sure as I have never been inside one.

Sorryto intervene beerman..but if you read my post you'll see that the Acer is still £299.99 at Comet with free delivery on the 5-8 day option..and with 3.5% quidco...so better to buy there.

sorry beerman...I see you've mentioned it..we seem to be answering at the same time on many of these PC queries LOL
#12
Lol I did, read the bottom of my post. ;)

Also to the person buying, i do not see any operating system listed in that price. I take it he is installing one? If so I can't see him giving it to you free of charge unless it is an illegal license.

I would go for the Comet one Curry posted. It is perfect for your needs and a great price.

Thanks guys, will check them all out now and let you know how I get on.

OS is my own genuine version off my old PC, you cant update the illigal copies anymore anyway
#14
Lol, yes you can. ;)
#15
OK you can, but when I tried I got a virus that meant I had to wipe my whole comp and start again!
