I'm in the same position and have swayed towards the Ricoh R7 - excellent reviews and around £149 (plus quidco?)
Pretty! :)
8MP
Wide angle
7x optical zoom

Fuji F40

Bloody good camera for a compact.

I think they are £99 at Asda, maybe cheaper elsewhere.

Not to **** on others recommendations but I'm in the same position as the poster and:

The Kodak EasyShare Z1275 has BAD reviews - 4/10 on TrustedReviews, 5.6/10 on CNet

Fuji F40 is nice but a little bit budget feeling for my liking - only a 3x zoom...

Why not go for the 7x zoom of the well reviewed Ricoh R7? Those suggestions were already cheaper cameras - the R7 has been outshone by it's newer sibling - the R8 so it's going cheap!

I would always go for Fuji. Got a Z3 and really happy

Have a look at the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 as it takes great pics in my experience (and in the experience of 2 friends I know who have it),it has a 3" LCD and the 10x optical zoom is really handy. It also has 7MP and it can still fit in a pocket. It's not slimline due to the large optical zoom, but it is a fantastic camera and you can get it for £147 delivered now from egears:

http://www.egears.co.uk/pd_panasonic_dmc-tz3_digital_camera.cfm

Failing that you could try the DMC-TZ2 which has 6MP, 10x optical zoom and a slightly smaller LCD at 2.5", Play.com don't have any of their own stock, but Playtrade has one at £114.99 delivered.

PS Some people in a thread last year said you had to send egears returns to the US so maybe best to avoid if that's true. You can also get the TZ3 at the following:
