Been asked a few times recently, the answers have all been a car that the standard 17-25 wouldn't be seen dead in.

My first car was a Toyota Carina E to give you an example - that was 20 years ago though!

go to insurance comparison sites and keep changing the details of the cars you like. often chavmobiles like corsa and fiesta are considered high risk and you might get cheaper insurance on a larger car (even zafira can work out cheaper than corsa)

Best first car is one of those plugged in outside a shop, insurance dead cheap and fuel costs reasonable ;)

Other than that with having 5 kids all been there as teenagers it's all about what's 'cheap' to you, as one mans cheap is another ones bloody expensive.

When we got our son his first car last year at 18 we did quotes on Corsa, basic model (very expensive ) Peugeot 107 and Toyota aygo (cheapest) and Ford Fiesta basic model (bit more expensive than the aygo) we went with the fiesta

In which case whatever has a long MOT and you can afford to insure.
Don't underestimate how shafted your going to get with your first few years insurance.
