The new macbooks have glossy screens so I'd avoid them if you're going to be moving the laptop around at all.

At £1100 you may just be able to afford one of the new Lenovo X200s which are worth looking at if they're out yet.

There is no best laptop, since the term covers machines meant for lots of different purposes.

I would like t buy a laptop with 3GB, 120-250gb hard disk and dedicated graphics card, blu-ray drive and 17 inches, preferably with inbuilt TV tuner. I have seen ASUS X70SR and Sony and HP and even Acer marketing products like these. Any body ventures something intelligent (with no vested interest)

The Pavilion dv2800, dv6700, and dv9800 modes, sporting 14.1, 15.4, and 17-inch displays, come with either an Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Turion 64 X2 processor, integrated graphics or NVIDIA GeForce 8400M or 8600M, and Blu-ray burner on the 17-inch model.
In addition, the desktop replacement HDX-9300 also comes with a Blu-ray drive, plus Penryn T8100 or T9300 processor, 3GB RAM, and NVIDA GeForce 8800M GTS graphics card.
Details of pricing and UK availability to follow.

I have a budget of about £599
