How old is the boy? Is a laptop necessary? What type of games?

I've bought 10" Android tablets for the kids around the £100 mark. I put Amazon Underground apps (free games) on the tablets and it keeps them happy enough.

The age of your son is important - different recommendations dependent on whether he is 6, 11 or 15.

Or 48 :D

Does he have a particular game in mind that he wishes to play? This is important as you don't want to pay out for something that will not play the particular game he has in mind. I suspect, like most kids, he has one game in particular that he wants to play.

For example, if he wants to play Minecraft - most kids do - then he will need something with a keyboard and mouse, i.e. a laptop, as opposed to a tablet. You can only play the full version of Minecraft, as an example, on a laptop or desktop whilst on a tablet you can only play the pocket version of the game.

I'd go for a Chromebook, good security, but online browser games only (for now)

My first thought was a Chromebook also but it all depends on what game(s) stacey's son wishes to play.

There are some good deals on the Dell outlet for refurbished laptops today - some nice 15 and 17 inch laptops for about £40 to £360 including VAT. Some cheaper Celerons - lower performance computer chip - for about £200. There is also a 10% off code - 752QTRLL$T9SJS - which expires on the 21st.

Not sure whether this link will work or not:

This seems a good laptop. It is a Dell refurbished for £372.56 after applying the 10% off code that I mentioned above. 7 in stock at time of writing so they COULD simply be corporate laptops returned unused or simply new ones Dell is off-loading in the Outlet.

Look in argos for new laptop or ebay for old. Newer ones come with touch screen.
