Basically i will be using it for surfing the net, ebay, hukd, etc etc
a bit of music (do they have built in speakers or not?)
do they have cd/dvd drives?
will they run youtube videos etc?

what is the best deal around? Could someone summarise what these are capable of in comparison to a laptop?

rep at the ready! :)

any help?

I've looked on internet, netbook seems fine, however would it be capable to play youtube videos? This is unclear.

all netbooks have speakers and no netbooks have cd/dvd drives, yes they can run youtube, provided you install the needed plugins

highly reccomend the samsung netbook range (Nxxx) models.
i bought the N110 about 8 months ago now and think it was a really good buy, however i did pay £330, and there are many netbooks in the samsung range whcih are considerably cheaper and surpass it. Although i paid the added premium back then for the 9 hour battery life, which i can verify really is true, unless im streaming from the internet constistently which it can sometime reach 5hrs then.

I have looked on here at deals by simply typing in netbook in the search bar and a few seem to be around £220 and seem really good. Would this be adequate for my needs? What processor is good?

Word of warning for Win7 models is that they only have Win 7 "Starter" installed - limited to opening 3 programmes at once.
Also - 1gb mem is fine but you might want to increase it to 2gb - do a google check on the model and see how easy it is (Dell's are woeful to upgrade)
The Samsung model you listed is also wireless N which is the way ahead!

N150 hands down, its like my N110 just improved heck of a lot.
has wireless N (mine doesnt, dont have a wireless n router anyway, but having N makes it future proof)
Windows 7 (although starter is slightly restricted compared to my XP)
N450 processor (slightly better than my N270)
Matte finish with LED backlight (defintely beats my glossy shiz)
and £80 cheaper :P

pretty much same case style as my N110, looks really classy and so much more sleeker and professional than some of the acer carp of a netbook range etc.
