Hi

Any experience about what is the best newsgroup to join please?
If you can plz include why would you recommend a specific one in terms of value, speed, file types availability or any other useful info plz.
Do I have to have a minimum files size to join (i.e one of my friends said you need to have 50-75 GB data to join specific groups), is share amount/ratio important?

Thanks a lot.

Astraweb is best value @ $11 month unlimited http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/kleverig-11.html
has 512days retention ssl 20 connections

Giganews is the best but $24 a month for the equivalent package.

I'm currently a member of astraweb and have been a member of giganews. Only difference i noticed was giganews seemed to be better in terms of completion (i never had missing parts to my downloads). On a few occasions with Astraweb my downloads have had missing parts (article not found error) casing the download to fail (not enough information to rebuild from parity files). Saying that i have no intention to leave astraweb bang for buck they are the best.

You don't need to upload or have 50-75 GB data to join either of these. Share amount/ratio has no impact on your service from these newsgroups. If your unlucky your isp will have QOS and throttle the use of these services at peak times (if so change isp)

Mars104 thanks for your reply
Which software would you recommend please? this link you posted, seems tempting but can I cancel at any time? what does 512 days retention means?
Thanks

yes you can cancel at any time. 512 retention means they keep files that have been uploaded on their servers for 512days. To download you need a Usenet client like grabit. To search you need a usenet search facility (like grabit search) or a use a Usenet indexing website like newzbin. These two mentioned are not free there are free versions available but they are the ones id recommend. some googling on "usenet search" or "usenet indexing website" should give you loads of info. im off out now so cant reply till later this evening

According to this http://www.news.astraweb.com/plans.html, the speed is different

For the software side of things i use newsbin pro, you'll also need a program called quickpar -to repair any downloads that need it, quickpar is free, newsbin pro comes as a trial, but is one of the best. if your with virgin media, they offer a free service which lets you download files upto 7 days old
