I need an MOT, but am unsure which is the best place to go! There's obviously loads of small garages around, but am I better off going to a well known company like Kwik Fit? I used Nationwide Autocentres last year who tried to tell me there was a hole in my exhaust and I needed a new one. When I questioned them about it and asked why I'd passed all the emissions tests if there was a hole in it, they suddenly "made a mistake and there wasn't actually a problem with my exhaust at all"! I won't be going there again!!!!
If anyone could recommend a good MOT place in Birmingham I'd be grateful too!!! Thanks!

I tend to stick to MOT testing stations, where they don't carry out any work - so they have no real interest in whether it passes or fails.

Oooooh, ok... How do I know if it's one of them? Surely if they carry out MOTs they'll have "MOT testing station" anyway? Or is it different? Do I just ask if they do the work as well?

I can't recommend one personally for your area - but I would imagine there's got to be something on the DVLA site etc. Basically, the local one I use is just purely for MOT's. No garage work (unless very minor adjustments/topping up fluids) tend to be done there. So, basically book your car in for a certain time - attend - MOT test - pay your money - drive away with pass/fail.

I go to a Council run MOT Testing Station. They do not carry out repairs. They charge the full cost of an MOT though which is £54. It's worth it in my opinion though as they never unnecessarily charge you for work which doesn't need doing.

The nearest one to you is:

Montague Street, Bordesley, Birmingham, B9 4BA Tel no - 0121 303 3311

i use the council mot station local to me in southampton as well, and they are brilliant. They actualy try and help u get your car to pass the mot. you have 2 weeks to get any work you need doing done and then its free to re-test. I took my car back into them 5 times in one day to test the emmisions cos it kept failing and they were very helpful and kept giving me tips about what to try next

god I hate these threads with a passion when they come up :x everyone always banging on about council run mot stations that only do mots blah blah, ALL mot stations wether independent or main dealer council run etc have to carry out the mot as per VOSA's rules, so wether they do just mots/mots & repairs, we all have to carry out the same test !

If anyone is not happy with the out come of a test wether its a fail or pass, appeal it, thats why the appeal process is in place !

ok carry on rant over :p

They all do the same test, but are all garages truthfull about what work needs to be done? The answer is no, and the council has nothing to gain out of failing you on something because they want your business.

I took an old car that we had once to a garage that had a £20 mot promotion and the amount of work that they said needed doing was ridiculous, we didnt get the work done in time for the re-test so about a month later took it to a council mot test centre and alot of the things they said needed doing wasnt even flagged up as an advisory and things like the tyres that they failed it on were only an advisory at the council centre.

After this i decided the council was the only way forward

there certainly are garages out there that do things for thier own gain & not have the cutomers best interest at heart.
we get customers bring in cars that have been done else where and they weren't happy with the test  & always my first question to them is why not appeal , most cant be bothered, oh well its thier money !
I had one last month, they had it failed elsewhere, they weren't happy so i did another test, failed it on less & did the repairs, then they decided to appeal  bit late for that as you shouldn't have any repairs done that might effect any appeal outcome.
