Incredibly, and this is the first time I can ever remember being wrong about something, but it seems I did make a mistake in suggesting OP should return the ring.

I have checked with my font of all knowledge (no not deeky) Google and it seems the ring was a gift after all. Judge Judy cannot be trusted I have decided.

I would suggest buying diapers because I'm guessing he wont be sending child support anytime soon. Babies come after the marriage commitment in my book FWIW.

I have made the assumption you are American, by the use of the word diapers, we call them nappies.

I am sad to see you comment on lack of religious commitment and then demean the choice of the OP to go ahead and have her baby, because you believe they should be born into a marriage.

One in two marriages end up in court these days, the children of these families are often very badly affected, they do not get a better life because they were born after a ceremony. I see the awful consequences visited on the children I teach frequently. Perhaps you could hold your opinion without giving the impression that someone else's choices are less than yours....

Probably your only choices would be Ebay or maybe Gumtree (a hard sell I would think) if not then a jewellers at scrap value as no matter how nice it may be that is generally all they will offer you. Also insurance valuations are often crazy and done at top retail prices.

Good luck and take care if you go down the Ebay route.

nope to posh here for that ;) we have afew second hand jewelers though
banned#11
take it to all the second-hand jewellers and sell it to the one who offers the most, which will probably be around 25% of what was paid if your lucky
#12
Depends on the quality of the ring. If it's 18 carat gold or more with a nice diamond then an independent jeweller would probably be interested and would offer a price for the whole piece as a ring. If it's 9 carat with small stones then it's only really worth the price of the materials, in which case a gold buying company is likely your best bet.
#13
18k 0.75ct from the paperwork. will go around a few. even 25% is a new outfit lol
#14
Too posh? Must be Harrogate then?

Is it a single diamond or a cluster? Even so it's a decent size and will be highly saleable as it is. I doubt a company who breaks up jewellery for materials will offer as much as a jewellery retailer. Obviously common sense but make sure you don't just take the first offer you get. You won't get the insurance value though as that's for replacement purposes. See how it goes.

Ebay is probably the best bet as you don't get that much from the other places - good luck :)

Would you not get more if you pawned it and then didn't collect it? I've never pawned anything before, just feel like I know everything because I watched Posh Pawn haha.

A ring given in contemplation of marriage should be returned if the marriage does not take place.

I was under the impression you were right from a legal standpoint, but I just had a quick look and turns out she's entitled to it:

The gift of an engagement ring shall be presumed to be an absolute gift; this presumption may be rebutted by proving that the ring was given on the condition, express or implied, that it should be returned if the marriage did not take place for any reason.

Basically, although it can seem unfair, this means that unless there was an agreement to return the engagement ring if the wedding was cancelled then the recipient is under no obligation to return the ring. The courts will generally say there was an implied intention that the ring would be returned if it had particular sentimental value to the person who proposed, for example if it was a family heirloom.

As the ring has a box and certificate and all the other assorted gubbins, I'm guessing it's not an heirloom, so he gets squat.

And if he buggered off then, frankly, arguing the moral case is pointless. Unless OP was secretly poisoning him and he left for self-preservation. Which I'm sure isn't the case.

Actually, I think that's where I got my original impression from, though Judy would have said "give it back, even though he's an asshat". Seems even American law differs by state, but there are some who feel it's a payment towards an agreement of marriage. Which just makes marriage a fancy and expensive form of prostitution IMO. Same reason I don't agree with asking parents for her hand. You're basically treating your future wife like property with which to be bargained.

It would be more dignified to return it.

Other gifts and possessions i would say keep, but this is a symbol of marriage.

You don't have to lower yourself to his level. Rise above it. Send it back and keep your dignity.

Sounds like a charming character. I would have though that the army would have taught him discipline.

The army does, the problem is the rest of UK society braking down the moral fibre of this country. It all gets monetised. Pity we don't have a church going society anymore.
