Best place to get an iPhone in the UK?

Looking to get hold of an iPhone, not wanting to go to ebay.
it really would make the best present for my other half and it would be really unexpected too.
Yes I know the phone isn't workable in the UK, but it's just been unlocked so it's only a matter of time in the UK, and it's over rated, and over priced too yadda yadda.

anyone know where to look?
been thinking about the cheapest flights in and out of the US, but they come up more expensive than the super inflated ebay costs.

beginning to think this isn't possible

not sure if anyone has managed to unlock the thing yet though...cant be too long
#2

They said on radio 1 yesterday that you need a american credit card and social security number to buy one anyway??? think its best to wait:giggle:
#9
no, you need a credit card and SSN to activate it.
there are many ways around this

you buy the phone and the contract as seprerate things its not like in the uk:roll:
#11
Couldn't you buy one from an amazon.com marketplace seller ?
#12
Spark - hadn't thought of that, will check it out
#13
Just found a power seller on ebay who can send me an 8GB one for £389 including 3 day shipping from NY.
not bad when the retail price is said to be £300-£50 in the UK come december.

if only they would hurry up and unlock it, this would seriously be the coolest present ever....not that I'm thinking of the brownie points :D
#14
The only danger there is import tax.
#15
yeah I thought that, I emailed the guy and he said he can guarantee no tax...but that sounded a bit fishy.
still, gonna look around and see, may have to wait till December, was just trying to be imaginative and thoughtful
#16
He can't guarantee that, the only thing he can do is declare it as a gift which does work most of the time.

£400 is still a lot though for what is basically just an 8GB mp3 player, but I wouldn't have minded getting one. :)

I know, but ti's so much more than that, with Wi-Fi, Google Maps, Camera, and the immenent possiblity of phone due too
...it's pretty amazing...want one for myself...can you "Loan" someone a birthday gift? :D
#18
You could try, but I think that would make you a taker-backer. ;-)
#19
sometimes it's just worth it :-D
#20
However a basic knowledge of google and a bit of research shows the iPhone does take a regular, removable sim card
#21
dcx_badass
Do some research, quite a few phones in the US don't take normal sim cards, they have them hard wired into the phone!

i have done my research thanks I lived there for 5 years.....very very few phones are like that now... certainly not the iphone

arcsbite good luck in your search and let us know how you get on...
#22
No of course you're right, mobiles in the US work very differently to those in Europe, I know because I've lived on both continents too, the Iphone is a bit of an exception though.
banned#23
Its definitely a fixed sim, check out clicks review on it...I'd wait if I were you

#24
that's not an iPhone, it's a HTC Touch
it's not a fixed sim in the iPhone....here is Apple's support page telling you how to remove the sim http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305746

Hey i've still got one iphone left, its fully activated (i.e everything works expect phone functions) i'll send it for 400 inc postage if ure still interested?
#26
would have taken it in a heartbeat mate but I bought an 8GB from London for £412 & £10 postage from ebay today

shame.
#27
There is speculation that the UK iphone will be a slightly different revision (will add 3G support) as there are currently no EDGE network in the uk.

Id probably hang fire for a week until there is an anouncement about it.

Do functions such as googlemaps work when it needs credit from the sim / airtime contract?
#30
john - there's always specualtion, hopefully it will be 3G, but that's six months away regardless.

space - you can activate the iPhone without a contract in the UK, this means everything except the phone/sms works, so iPod, Wi-Fi, Google maps ect all work, it's only a matter of weeks before you'll be able to put any sim in and use it.

yin - that's not hacked, not does it "work in the UK" it was one guy who had vodafone bind his sim, there is no proof and the way sims are numbered in the UK means it's highly likely this guys lying.
even if he was telling the truth, you'd need an iPhone, an o2 XDA and a vodafone contact just to unlock it....best waiting for a hack
#31
The iPhone comes out in Europe in the 3rd Quarter, and will be offered by O2 exclusively.

I would like one, but I can't find out if Tom Tom or similar satnav will work on it. If it did, I would love it.

Secondly, the camera is a bit naff compared to others. The second generation iPhone will be cool, but I guess it's gonna be a long time for that!
#32
are you certain of this?
I read all the O2 talk, I also read that O2 said they hadn't finalsed or agreed andything yet.
hope it is O2, would save me switching supplier
