I was in Asda at the weekend and they had an ONN DVD player that was HDMI and Divx USB etc.. on introductory offer £29.99. I can not see it on their website but the 2 stores in Bournemouth have them.

The ports listed on avforums say it has
1x scart
1x hdmi
1x svideo
1x composite

It is also multi region out of the box

Seems to get reasonable reviews.

If your PS3 is updated to the latest firmware (1.7??), why would you need an upscaling DVD player as the PS3 will do this for you??? Just trying to save you some cash!!!

Spark,

I had a similar problem. It seems that upscaling DVD players tend to operate via HDMI, and Component just sends out 480P. Something to do with HDCP.

Make sure that the 1 you buy upscales via component. Read the print carefully

Well the 360 does and that's what I've been using but I'm considering selling that because I don't really play games on it anymore.

Towner, my PS3 is on 1.50 and I dont really want to update it at the moment, but the other issue with it is that its a HK system and it will only play R3 dvds and region free ones that are in NTSC format ie it wont output PAL at all, that's why I'd rather just get a dedicated player, I appreciate the heads up though. :)

In that case I would be looking at the following:
Philips 5980
Tosh SD370
Samsung HD870

Afraid all only upscale through HDMI but all offer cracking picture for the price!!!
I have the HD870, got it from Empire Direct using Google Checkout for £45.
Have seen the SD370 for £39, will have a look now as can't remember where it was!!

I think you will find that the 360 only outputs at 480P / 576P for DVDs mate

Mine upscales them to 720, the TV says so.

Thanks for that, I think I'll probably end up leaving it though, I need one with high def component really.

Doesn't really matter - if you send 480p, the HDTV will do the upscaling. There's no guarantee your DVD player will do a better job, and if it's a cheap model it'll likely be worse compared to any recent HDTV.

Upscaling is nothing special, every HDTV can do, every PC can do it.

So are there no dvd players with HD component output ?
