My girlfriend's Toshiba Equium came with a TS DVD drive in it and I think it would be fair to say that it's a bit cack.

Could anybody recommend a decent model at a good price ? Thanks :)

Do you want a replacement internal drive or an external one? The latter will be cheaper but not as tidy.

i don't think upgrading dvd drive for laptop is possible... at least it's far from easy and can be very expensive. chances are you need to find a dvd drive with the same physical form as your laptop, with the right connector, and hope that the BIOs support the new drive. The best way if not the only way to upgrade laptop dvd drive is to buy components from broken or discarded units, with the similar/same model as your girlfriend's laptop. Though this still can be expensive.

I agree with the previous poster, your best bet is to just get an external one.

It's actually fairly straightforward but more expensive to change the DVD drive. People like http://www.portables.co.uk/ or http://www.pcupgrade.co.uk have them and if you give them a call, they will help.

Really ?
Because Ive seen internal laptop IDE dvd drives on microdirect, they do a pio one for 26 quid, I was just wondering if anybody knew of a cheaper one.

I replaced the drive in my old compaq and it was just a case of moving a catch and then sliding the old drive out and I'm an IT engineer anyway.

That's a good price; can you give a link as I'm looking for one for a Novatech (mitac 8088) laptop?

Most modern ones really although it looks like it is optimized for slimline units, but it's standard form factor so it will still fit.
