Megatrain go between London and Portsmouth, looks like £10 each way - you'll actually be travelling on South West so assuming it goes from Waterloo...

Which provider is the train service?

It is usually always cheaper to book in advance even if a few hours.

I personally find going direct to the train company cheapest

It may have changed since I lived down that way, but it used to be a regular scheduled South West Trains train with a sticker on the window of the Mega train coach - one of the advantages of megabus and SWT being owned by the same company I guess :)

different fares on the same train?? so whats the catch - missing seats?? lol!! its definitely a cracking price for a last minute booking..

This is worth noting - also I'm not sure if you have to book the day before departure? If so, you have 50 minutes :)

How does megatrain.com work with the automatic barriers at stations?

Barrier staff will have a copy of the megatrain.com passenger loading sheet and passenger reference numbers will be checked. You must give the guard or station staff your reservation number when requested. Make sure that you obtain a reservation number for each journey you reserve. While not required, we do suggest you bring a printed copy of your payment confirmation page, reservation confirmation email or SMS message, as these will include your reservation number(s). For details of our conditions, please see our Terms and Conditions page. As this process will obviously take a little longer than checking a ticket, we specify that megatrain passengers should be at the station 10 minutes prior to departure.

I think it's just trains that they've identified as never running at decent capacity, so rather than making nothing from the empty seats they have a carriage of cheaper seats. As far as I know the décor etc will be the same (as the same train will be serving peak customers later in the day) :)
