Can anyone suggest a good way to dispose of a laptop? I have an old one (circa 2008) that I no longer use. It has an issue where it shuts down as soon as it's started up and therefore about a year ago I replace it. The reason I kept the old one is because I could get it started up long enough to erase the hard drive and don't want any of my documents/information falling into the wrong hands. I don't need anything off it (had backups) and I'm not really interested in trying to sell it. Does anyone know of a way to safely dispose of it without spending a lot of money to do so?

Most laptops have a section on the back that can be removed with just a couple of screws to reveal the hard drive. Even if not the whole back would come off with relative ease.
You could re-use the hard drive in an enclosure like one of the these.

Remove the hard drive, and smash with a hammer. The rest of the laptop you can take to the local waste centre.

Consider this site: http://www.laptop-recycling.com/
Haven't tried myself tho...

why is it shutting down - ie if it's software related you could boot of a cd or usb and run a program like partition magic and erase the disk
worst scenario - remove the drive and then sell the laptop on ebay for spares (people always need old laptops and will often fix them)- if all else fails get a big magnet an leave it next to were the hard drive is and all data will soon be gone? (ok I have not ever had to try this)

You could securely wipe the hard drive prior to giving it to charity etc. You can find some software here:

May be worth checking to see if your local council collects old electrical appliances. Mine does with the bins each fortnight.

Your local Currys electrical store with also recycle old electronics - no need to have purchased anything.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I've ordered a mini screwdriver from eBay and I'm going to try and take out the hard drive. I'll then either try to sell everything else for parts of just throw them away.

Nice one, if you cannot get the hard drive to work outside of the laptop be sure to drill a hole through it before you throw it away.
