Best Way To Buy Large Amounts Of US Dollars

I read a thread on here a while back that some places were offering an above average exchange rate if you bought a few thousand in currency. I'm looking to buy about £3000's worth and am looking for a great rate.

Anyone got any info or ideas ?

Thanks

Hi,
I've used the services of FirstForex and Jez in their office gave me a much better rate than anyone on the high street or even online.
The best reates I found on the high street were M&S, AMEX Travel and the Post Office.
You need to set up an account with them but it can be done in a day or two.
Anyway, they are very helpful.

Hi this is a good site and if you click through to the top best offers they offer better deals for larger amounts or order now and travel in a few months
http://www.comparetravelmoney.co.uk/
or you could try getting the nationwide credit card they give a good rate, spend on this while in usa then pay when you get home.
Tesco in store also give a good if not one of the best rates.
depends what you are doing, if your investing abroad then look at the link above if your going on holiday then use a card, maybe something with cashback or points etc then pay off the balance when you return to avoid interest.

There is an excellent guide about getting a good deal on travel money. There is also a travel money maximiser tool which you can use find some other sources and compare them against the already given links on the thread.

Key point is that the best option is the one which gives you maximum number of dollars against X amount of pounds no matter what is the commission of the company and the exchange rate they offer. Companies dodge the customers by offering zero commission and giving less exchange rate at the same time.

I use nationwide debit card for the shoppings in other currency and to withdraw money in other countries as they dont charge you for cash withdrawls and their exchange rate is also competitive.Though the card wont work at every cash machine abroad and you have to try some ATMs before you can get some cash.

Ask around where you work, or your friends, or even here [!], if anybody is coming from the US to the UK & wants (a lot of) GBP to spend whern they get here.

No commission fee if you find the right person!

Also, you might like to check at The Post Office as they regularly do zero commission rate deals.

Always use Travelex, buy online before travelling and pick up at airport.
They also offer 100% buyback on cash and cheques for a small fee, a few quid.

Zero commission is often a big catch, they can compensate by giving you a poor exchange rate. So, the rule of thumb is to look for who gives you maximum number of dollars for a certain number of pounds.

I have always found www.thomasexchange.co.uk the best , I got my dollars there for my May trip, I guess I was lucky though as I got the $2 to the £ several months ago, I think it is $1.46 today.

Hope this helps
