Looking at changing my car. £5000 budget. Want a saloon car and not had a BMW before. Looking at 2007/08 models with about 50k miles for that sort of price but can anyone tell me the difference between 318d and 320d models. Seems the 320 has more bhp.......is there much difference in mpg? Which is the better version? I do about 14k miles a year, mixture of local and motorway. Any advice appreciated.

both quite similiar, had these for company cars lots of motorway miles, the 320d has a bite more bite to it, however if you want m sport package etc perhaps 318d is better value

Probably the best advice is steer clear....buy Jap, this coming from someone who has had both bmw and Audi....would never go back unless it was brand new worry free motoring

bought my 2016 320d tourer 2 months ago although its a new car when you put it into sport it feels so alive ..love this car .. have tested the Merc and Audi and went for this ..quality build that will last for years

Funnily enough this was my initial thought.....I have a qashqai at the moment and was looking at a new shape Toyota avensis but felt it looked a bit boring. Have had problems with VW engines in the past so don't want an Audi VW group car to be honest.

Take theshepherd83 advice and run! BMW and Volks as good as they are are good at masking prior issues. And they have problems; ranging from constant oil leak around seal to engine light constantly activated no matter how many times you were at the garage. If both not new, run. Try Merc or Handa.

for what you will pay for those looking at hyundai. 5 year warranty with all the kit

Put some money to it and get 5 series ... Had both and massive difference in quality . Yeah probably higher miles ,but I personally wouldn't go back to a 3 . Well maybe an m3 :)

Think I'll get whatever good 2 year lease deal is on HUKD once my car goes back early next year. Don't see the point in giving someone £5k? Pay for a nice holiday with that and get something like the stonking Skoda Octavia lease deals that were around earlier in the year, about £130pm if I remember rightly

i went the Lexus route....really nice cars, suppose it is very subjective, saying that the next door neighbour has just got a bmw 520d m-sport....the offer he got is amazing in my opinion if u fancy pcp/pch

The pre lci version have turbo and swirl flap issues and the lci is known to drop the timing chain which is very costly...
Also they have DPFs clogging up... I own the pre lci 320d m-sport tourer for about 2 1/2 years now beautiful motor had the swirl flaps removed and never had any issues...
#13
DPF will be problematic on a diesel that's done less than 50k miles in 7/8 years!

Had a 320d ed which returned fantastic mpg.

I was going to jump on this but

if the excess mileage is 4999 or less. If the excess mileage is 5000 or more you will incur a charge of 21.00 pence per mil

I average 15-20k a year :(

I have had a 318d tourer on an 09 plate for 4 years and am very happy with it, touch wood no problems whatsoever had a couple of tyres and a service and that is it, also bought a mini because of the BMW build quality, it has 147bhp and is quite quick, insurance is cheap £390 a year, hope this helps

50k miles on a 320d for £5k isn't going to happen, the low miled ones are a high premium and the majority of these cars have big miles if you look.
They're meant to be used no sit about hence why some have 200k on them.
320d is a nice car I've drove few. With any car you get problems, but if your buying from a dealer you'll get at least a little warranry.
What about a 520d? Going to have big miles but they go forever if looked after

Strange I'm the opposite always had 5series, but had a F10 530d in for service and ended up getting damaged by them so had a F30 330d on loan for two weeks.

Having had one I've changed to a new F30 3 Series and it feels so much better car the 5 series felt dated and boring when you want to "enjoy" a blast

brilliant price though granted not enough miles for me either but 299 and no deposit very good deal...... apparently they have a bit of an overstock as the new 5 comes out in march

Got rid of my 118d a few months back and now have a 120d. Pretty much the same engines as in the 3 series. Personally, I'm a bit disappointed by the 120, even though its 50bhp more powerful, it doesn't really feel it, although A road overtakes are better. MPG is almost exactly the same at 50.4mpg on a 230 mile commute on 90% motorway at around 80mph.
What I do like about these cars, and I have had the 3 series, is the comfort on long distance trips, quiet, solid feeling and comfortable. Budget for winter tyres if you live anywhere that snows!

I got an 05 Impreza turbo for my weekend blast .. Still maintain 5 is a quality machine and offers a whole lot more than a 3 .

Horses for courses, must say I think the new 5 series about to be released will be a big hit, very much like the latest 7series.
Currently have a F10 530d and have a 330e on order to replace it

Yeah I can't afford a decent 330 for thrashing at weekend and the 5 suits me fine ,mon to fri . Yeah I like the 7 too but too rich for me at the moment and the Impreza is a chavvy hoot and cheap as chips .. Sad innit.

both 2ltr these days, but go for a 320d - its got better injectors and a smoother power delivery

At your budget and spec req, prob worth considering a 1series...although even that's going to be hard to find
