I think it's because Virgin doesn't use line rental and there's a £30 charge to cease that by BT wholesale. It's in terms and conditions. If you were to change to TalkTalk for example you wouldn't have to pay that.

It's a charge to disconnect the broadband from the exchange / local cabinet. A guy basically goes out to your streets cabinet and disconnects you from the local BT Exchange. You may have seen it once in a while when someone's there BT or Virgin at those green boxes in the street. It's in your T&C's relating to this charge. It covers the engineers wages and materials etc.

You can dispute it. Say that you was not told this charge would be added if you disconnected the broadband at the time of signing up. Ask them to listen to the call if they say - well check BT.com etc. Say it's a hidden charge and you feel you should not have to pay it. Don't uff and puff cos that gets you no where. Ask to speak to their manager. If they don't do it then ask to be put through to executive complaints etc. Be professional and polite and it may work. 7 out of 10 times you'll just get a goodwill of £30 applied to your account.

PS: if you moved broadband suppliers who use BT's network then their would be no charge. As you are moving to Virgin who have their own network infrastructure you are being charged by BT for effectively disconnecting the broadband signal to your property from the little green cabinet.

Hope this helps.

Oh and you may also want to ask why they did not inform you at the time of signing up. As they have to read a script telling about all cancellation charges. Say you was aware of charges to cancel the contract but not if stopping the BB and feel you have been miss informed. Ask for them to listen to the call if you honestly feel you was not told of the £30 disconnection charge.

They then have to listen to the call and get back to you.

its ridiculous,

its a cost that should be factored into the billing per month.
to charge someone at the end is completely bang out of order.

i was actually pretty satisfied with my bt infinty service for the past 18 months. but since they want to squeeze me for £30 i will go out of my way to discourage as many potential customers as possible

I've heard about this, I wanted to cancel my EE broadband and sign up again as new customer to get £100 quidco... But when they told me it's free to transfer but £30 disconnect, I moved to BT

Next year, I'll move back to EE hopefully eligible for more cash back!!

What will happen of you said I'm moving houses?

They tried the same with me. I ended up going to Broadbandgenie and they took care of everything with out charge. I am now with sky.
