Budget Bike Help

Looking for a bike to take me to college and back every day as my current bike is not so good, hoping to spend around £200.

Been into Halfords and saw the carrera vulcan for £249.99, with my student discount I can get it for £225 and if I buy before end of November you get £20 of cycle accesories, so the bike is basically £205.

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_273419_langId_-1_categoryId_165499

Anyone have any other recommendations or comments about this bike?

Thanks.

Think that bike is out of my price range.

For what you want if for, I'd be tempted to get a Subway 1 from Halfords (it very much sounds like you're just going to use it on road "take me to college and back every day".

The surplus from it being under your budget, could fund some mudguards.

Would it be worth the extra money for the vulcan with the front suspension as I do have a habit of going up and down tall kerbs a lot.

I was told that the cheaper bikes with full suspension were not very high quality, I have found this out after having a similar bike to that £110 Boss bike, so am looking for a better quality bike.

No.

Kerbs are bad for your wheels, anyway.

If you're cycling on the road or light trails, then ultimately I feel you'll end up cursing a suspension fork - they add a lot of weight, rob you of energy, and are another item that requires maintenance.

It very much sounds like you're going to be cycling on road.

So don't waste your time with a mountain bike and suspension. Get something more suitable - you'll find it better to ride, quicker and lighter. Tyres will be more conducive, and the spare in your budget will help with the cost of accessories.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking bling or gizmos with bikes. Keep it simple, in the main. The number of people I know who've gone for the mountain bike, with a suspension fork, and disk brakes, that have ended up cursing the weight of the thing, wanting to put a rigid fork on, and opting for V-brakes, because they only ride the damn thing on the road, and are sick of having to faff with it, and find the knobbly tyres truly tedious.

I suspect a Subway 1 (or something similar) would be ideal for you, Reasonable frame, reasonably light bike, components that can be upgraded over time, Tyres suitable for the road, mounts for mudguards and racks, and very modest and understated image, which means it may not appeal to the attention of bike thieves.

For the money its great, you cant go wrong buying from one of the top bike manufacturers like Specialized. I wouldnt touch those others for them sorts of prices.

If your only using it for the road though, like others have said a mountain bike probably isnt the best option.

Thanks for all the suggestions, will take a look at local bike shops and Halfords on Saturday.
