Can any of you recommend a builder in the Solihull/Birmingham area? I want to extend our kitchen. I've flicked through the Yellow Pages, but a personal recommendation would be better. Read More

wise words

we had an extension done, 3 quotes, the guy we went for did it all himself apart for the electrics & he stayed on the job until completion & not dissapearing every 5 mins, he had the odd day where he was waiting for materials to turn up & went to see another job, but he always kept us in the picture, I'd seen some of his work & he's a fussy sod like me, you'd have never known the guy had been & built it,he was superb, cleared up everyday after finishing, paid him in stages so the last payment was the final one, but he wouldnt accept it unless we were 100% happy, now thats how to run a business

Draw up a contract and if it is a large job, have a retention percentage to be paid only after "X" months following completion.

Check their insurances and I mean, phone the companies who they say insure them. Get their ID as well and check they are registered where they say they are. If anyone raises any objections, get rid of them.

If you deem necessary, incentivise them financially but perhaps also have financial penalties.
