Apologies in advance if this is another trivial post.

For some reason I really want a new phone even though the one I am using is doing OK atm. (battery problems and camera gone rubbish).

I've never bought of gumtree etc and having read about some scams have been really wary about it too.

What would be the best way to pay for something bought on Gumtree/shpock? Looking at spending 550 to 600 on new Google phone, but would love for someone to talk me out of it. Having a little panic on what to do!!

My contract is over but my network don't sell it - and monthly prices from cpw are extortionate!!! I've decided to switch to the virgin media offer until the price dropped but keep on "wanting" to buy the phone. :(

Sorry for the essay!!!

How about the o2 as new phones cheaper and you know will be 100% ok they have guarantee as well

I've bought and sold on gumtree before and most people will prefer to do deals in person for cash. Beware if buying a phone this way as it could be there's, they could sell it to you then they could report it lost or stolen, so it would block your phone and they would get another from the insurance.

O2 don't sell the Google pixel phone though.. :(

I'd love to buy it from a "proper place" but £819 is a crazy amount! (And I don't have a friend at EE and cpw so can't benefit from any discount! !)

That's what I'm worried about - as the person is selling an upgrade. I'd have preferred it if they were selling a payg phone.

After selling it to me, if they do get it blocked, is there nothing that I can do afterwards to unblock it? Eg if I ask the seller to give me some sort of proof of purchase?

Sorry can't edit my previous comment.

If I also get it insured would my insurance company be able to help me if the seller gets the phone blocked?

I just wouldn't. 600 with pretty much no come back. nah

Buy in ebay but go through PayPal so your covered.
#9
Buy a cheap Chinese phone instead all the features less then half the price, probably made in the same factory too, madness spending that much on a phone especially from somewhere like there.
#10
buy on shpok cash in person asknfor there details before hand i.e cooy if bankncard and passport if there legit they will do this .so if they report it stolen you can get them done for fraud
#11
Save more money until you can afford it without having to risk it being stolen, etc

Or just get one on contract.

I Bought a brand new Samsung S7 Edge phone from a seller with a 99% feedback on ebay who said that it was an upgrade and he did not want. It arrived in the sealed original box and we used it for 1 month and now it is useless. I thought it was broken and sent it to Samsung for repair, who were useless. Eventually after one month they tell me the phone is blocked. I then check to find the seller has reported it stolen. Now I have a good camera that cannot make phone call or receive them. I never realised that the original owner can do this at any time. So my advise is do not buy a phone from anyone but a reputable supplier.

Always buy from smartfonestore.com , its a safe way to buy 2nd hand nearly new or mint.

why don't you complain to Ebay / paypal /and the police then if you have proof the seller has reported it stolen this is a crime.

i have no interest in ripping anyone off selling a phone but not in my wildest dreams would I give a complete stranger a copy of my passport or bank card, nor would I recommend anyone else to do the same, unless you want your bank account emptied or your identity stolen.

Why not just fill a claim with eBay or PayPal?

Why did you not claim on PayPal? You have 6 months from purchasing it to do this.

I was in similar situation. Wanted to buy Pixel XL but no stock on high Street. Bought BNIB Pixel XL 128GB on eBay in November for £700. If anything goes wrong with the phone I'll just go to eBay/PayPal and get refund. They will side with the buyer 99.99% of the time. Even if it's reported stolen and blocked you are not loosing anything.
#19
1. I wouldn't buy a phone other than from a reputable company, there are too many scammers just waiting to relieve you of your £££.
2. The new Google Pixel phone looks great but has well documented user issues (try Googling) with its speakers, it has put me off!
3. As a matter of interest, which Network are you on?

Its £600 new, just buy it outright.

Smartfonestore are 99% recycled stock so they're far from 'safe' in terms of being blocked - more likely than anywhere I'd say, as people probably feel more detached from the situation when sending to a recycler. It's a lot easier to get the problem fixed with a company like that than with an eBay seller though. Put simply, I would never buy a phone off eBay now - you're only covered for 6 months with PayPal, so if the phone gets blocked after that (by them not paying their bill) you're screwed. Even if the phone gets blocked before then you still have a lot of stress and hassle, since eBay didn't directly sell the item so you have to go about proving the fault etc. At least with a store you just ring, say it's blocked and they refund or replace after checking the IMEI. So on that basis I would consider buying from Smartfonestore.

Cex prices for the Pixel weren't bad (last time I checked). Especially locked to a network.

Isn't gumtree the same as shpock? just a different system.

I'm on Vodafone at the moment and will be switching to the virgin 30 day rolling contract soon.

It's 819 brand new. :(
It's silly money and I've never got a phone on payg - always through a contract. But as EE and cpw have only got rights for it, the monthly costs are too high for me (and a lot of upfront payment on most tariffs).

Thanks for mentioning point 2. I wasn't aware of any issues - will look into it. Hope it doesn't do a Note 7!! (Damn Samsung for killing that off before my contract ended and making it explosive!!. :( )

Currently on Vodafone - been with the for past 7 years as they would give me really good retentions discounts (30 -40%)! But they can't discount iphone 7s and even s7 edge was quite expensive. Contracts have become a lot more expensive over 2 years!!!

I Have and am awaiting Pay Pal, hopefully for a refund.
How ever I was trying to make the point not to buy.

I have but the point is about buying a phone on ebay and we have had to go through all the loops and was not aware of the problems before this happened.

As above, buy from Cex. The prices aren't too bad and you get warranty and somewhere to go back to if something goes wrong.

You will 99.9% be refunded by PayPal. So I wouldn't panic about it.

Its £600 new or from £37 a month (first 6 months half price on any Vodafone plan) on Vodafone upgrade through Carphone Warehouse. So just buy it new or upgrade, i wouldnt pay any where near £600 for a second hand phone.

Just seen that on Cex - if I get a virgin sim hopefully it will work if the phones locked to EE.
(I thought grade A was the best but they're selling grade B ones for more!!)

Thanks everyone for making me see sense!! Think I'm just going to wait for it to drop around the 500/600 mark on Cex or somewhere i can pay with my credit card! ! (Interest free one of course so I spread payments like a contract! !) :{

so how much money are you going to save by buying privately? £200 approx? Well it's a gamble - would you put that £200 on a table and spin a coin to see if you keep it or lose it? Either buy a cheaper phone from a reputable vendor - there's some really good phones, from mainstream companies at great prices (Look at the Huawei/honor range for example, new one coming out in four days ) or buy the full price new one. Huawei P9 £314 , here. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=huawei+p9&sa=X&biw=360&bih=524&tbs=cat:267,pdtr0:706402%7C732677,pdtr1:946019%7C1026549,pdtr2:1026550%7C1026551,vw:l,init_ar:SgVKAwiLAkoKUggI4o4rIIXcLEoKUggI4945IPXTPkoKUggI9tM-IPfTPg%3D%3D&tbm=shop&prmd=sivn&srpd=5275473007544991510&prds=epd:14375523777468622742,cdl:1,cid:5894573627758046999&ved=A 0ahukewjsndiflj7rahudeswkhffkdviqgtyisqu

Not everyone on E bay is a thief, but could you afford to meet one? You'll be giving them £600 for a paperweight if you pick one.
Never take notice of feedback -you can buy feedback, treat every purchase as the first one.

I have never considered any other phones as I've always been a Samsung user. As they're no longer selling the note 7 decided to switch to this one.

I think I'm just going to delete the shpock and gumtree apps of my phone. Seller's price is 625 now! Keep getting tempted :( humbug. But have to be sensible as I'd be more devastated if the phone got blocked etc. Not worth taking the risk.

It is actually a very good company to deal with - I bought the kids their iMoans (Grade B, unlocked) from there and the phones were in excellent condition. I have just bought a new S7 (not Edge), you can pick them unlocked for about £490 now...
