You dont say what "work" is in your description, but if all you are doing is surfing and general Office work (word processing and spreadsheets) then all the PCs you have listed are WAY over spec and probably twice as much as you need to pay.

You dont mention games so I will assume you are not going to play games.

You could buy a perfectly adequate Dell PC for £300 or so to do what you want.

1) The Aldi PC, though nice, is WAY over spec for what you want to do.

It is £489.99 and does not even come with a monitor or speakers which you would need to buy extra (probably over £100).

2) The Advent PC World PC is also WAY over spec.

It is £559 and has a Quad core CPU AND 6 Gb of memory (I run Vista happily on a DUAL core CPU and 2Gb).

It does not say so, but I guess it runs 64 bit Windows which you dont need and may cause you problems if you try to attach devices like Printers to it.

3) The John Lewis Acer also seems WAY over spec and expensive at £599.

No monitor is mentoined so not sure if you get one or not.

4) The Currys PC is also way over spec.

It has a Quad core CPU which you just dont need. The 2Gb of memory is about right, but you are paying £799 for it.

It has a TV tuner but if you dont plan to watch or record TV that is something you are paying for but dont need.

Here, for example is a Dell system unit that comes in at £234.60 with VAT and delivery.

http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&l=en&oc=D042210&s=bsd&dgc=AF&cid=5212&lid=122756&acd=bd67a867d384a85ac653e5b11e1c826a

Buy a separate monitor for around £100 (DONT select the Dell ones as they are overpriced on this offer).

So for around £350 or less you can have a decent Dell PC with a dual core CPU, 2Gb of memory, a 250Gb hard disk and Vista Home Premium.

This is less than half than some of the PCs on your list.

If you want to you could pay an extra £50 or £100 to get a slightly more powerful PC but the one I have listed above will be fine for basic office work.

for £399 including the monitor (untick the boxes for the options on the right hand side of the page) - this is perhaps a little over specified but should be reasonably future proof.
#4
yeah, the ones you have quoted are way over spec for work, depends what you need for work (ie just office or CAD, Visual studio etc) a dual core with 2 -3 gb ram should be sufficient!
#5
Sorry I should have specified my work involves desktop publishing and working with photos in photoshop. I will also be adding/edition films from camcorder.

I do play games online and from cdrom. I have a monitor already and speakers although new ones would be nice.
I just thought that if I got one with a high spec it would last me for a few years, especially as it is a gift and I am not paying for it ;-)

I also store a number of photos on it and would like to use my pc for more than i do now, possibly downloading music and films.

Thanks for all your feedback - it is much appreciated. What are these high spec ps's used for then if not to make them future proof?
#6
if you want it to last a few years and your willing to fork out

i'd go for a quadcore (any speed), 4 gb ram, 1tb harddisk and maybe a 8800 graphics card

should be able to get one for around 500 - tower only

should last you about 2 - 3 years minimum
#7
Thanks Mafia if u look at my post above I have been advised of 4 different ones - which one (if any) would you suggest ?
#8
uumm...
i would choose the one from PC world but the 3rd one comes close second
#9
Many thanks for this
#10
There is just so much jargon and too many to choose from
#11
this ones quite good and should last you a good few years!
